For SFO - on the cheap, no frills but clean with free parking and in a nice neighborhood (Cow Hollow Marina Dist) with easy access to bus transport we like Travelodge Golden Gate. Warning they have been doing maintenance on the website and the ressie system per the guy at the motel will be down for several days, you can still look at the motel but you might have to call them directly for ressies.

It really depends on what you want to spend
Handlery in Union Sq. is a really nice boutique hotel
of course there is the high end Fairmont, Mark Hopkins and the W
The Hilton Embarcadero is nice and located near the ferry building and the ballpark
There is a new Holiday Inn in Fishermans Wharf

We stayed at the Tanaya Lodge at Yosemite. It is just outside the South Entrance to the park. They have regular hotel style rooms or cabins. We stayed in the cabins. You can check out my Yosemite Trip Report below for more info.

Thank you esp for the hotel with free parking. We want to keep the cost down on some hotels so we can then splash out in Vegas and Disneyland.

Thanks i'll have a look.

IN SFO - the Columbus Motor Inn has free parking, a decent location, walking distance to Fisherman's Wharf, close to cable car turnaround and it's very reasonably priced.

Overall for hotel recommendations, I recommend you visit TripAdvisor.

I'm not certain - you need to get more info, but late March seems to me like Yosemite might be sort of snowed in . . . making driving a bit dicey. And, some of the passes might also be closed.

Death Valley should be nice that time of year. (Seriously, it's something to see.)

The coastal route from SF south is beautiful. Maybe an extra day en route?Cambria seems to be a push to me . . . we went Carmel to Cambria and felt a bit rushed. Do try to visit Hearst Castle as you will be right by it.

Thanks for that, I'll check about Yosemite. We've already seen a few places on the coast so one night should be enough.
