Hotel room allocation

Does anyone know how rooms are allocated? I was wondering whether the people who allocate know how much has been paid and reserve/allocate the better rooms for those who have paid full price over those who have snapped up the best offers?

I doubt it, I think they just allocate rooms like a lottery, of course no one knows the layout of rooms in the hotel, some may only have one bed which may be close to facilities etc.

I do remember asking for a balcony room at the DLH but was told they only sleep 2 so they couldn't accomodate our family but they gave us a ground floor room with a patio instead which was very nice.

I don't think the hotels know how much someone has paid for a room when they are sent the booking they probably allocate as they get them. Although they only sort the rooms a week before your stay.

I would say its definitely just - they get the list of names and occupancy for each check-in date, see what rooms are vacant, and book them in.

I've only paid full price once to stay onsite (my first ever trip, when I didn't know any better ) and since then, I've paid rock bottom price and had riverside rooms, new refurbished rooms, and even an upgrade on arrival to a higher-rated hotel.

Thanks, Nikki and Elaine, it's what I thought as we've had the same experience too but there must be huge variance in what people pay, especially when booking in one name only, so I just wondered if it influenced check-in at all. Glad it doesn't appear to do so.
