We have to be at an event at the Staples Center but don't really want to stay downtown. It is also possible that we may go to DL for day so I was wondering if there is somewhere to stay that would be a reasonable commute to both.

Probably one of the closest areas to the center between Downtown LA and Disneyland would be the Norwalk area. Probably about 20-30 minutes from each depending on traffic; in rush hour, it could be 45-60 minutes from the hotel to either. The Norwalk Marriott is probably the nicest of the hotels in the area. There is also a Holiday Inn in nearby La Mirada.

I guess it would be useful to know why you don't want to stay downtown so we can give you better ideas. There are many quality hotels near Staples and downtown, and there's a lot to be said for being able to walk to the venue with no driving or transit required.

Speaking of transit, Staples Center isn't too far from the 7th St/Metro Center Red Line subway station. Here's a Google Map of the walking path. This expands your options - maybe you can stay in Hollywood near the Hollywood/Highland Red Line station, or near Universal Studios. Someone recently mentioned staying at the Holiday Inn Express near H/Highland, and the Hollywood Renaissance hotel is there also.
