Hotel location between Anaheim and San Diego

We have 2-1/2 days in November before our Disney cruise in southern California. We spent a week there last fall, so we know what we want to do this time but not where we should stay. The first day we want to do a whale watching tour, the second day Disneyland, and the last day the USS Midway and San Diego. I was thinking of staying at Newport Beach but I was wondering if there was a good location that would be more central for this trip.

I would try to drive down to San Diego after dinner and not need to deal with the traffic the next day.

There are lots of hotels near the coast in Oceanside and Carlsebad. There are a lot closer to downtown SD a short drive from where the USS Midway is.
