looking to stay 2 nights next week. something economical, but clean. Any suggestions? any areas to avoid? thanks...

2 adults, 2 kids.

Germantown area and downtown surrounding Beale St. are your 2 best bets. Outside of those areas, you risk bad neighborhoods. There is a Holiday Inn Select Beale st. which is right across from the Peabody hotel and walking distance to Beale St and all the great BBQ joints. Germantown puts you closer to nice shopping and the zoo and museums. Avoid the airport area. Memphis is really one of those places where it is worth spending a little more on where you stay. We live about an hour away and visit every month or so.

There's a Courtyard by Marriott on Front St. (I think? the street that the trolley runs on) that is fairly new and super nice. We stayed there earlier in the summer. It was great to walk out and hop on the trolley down to Beale (and back).

We've been to Memphis several times (mostly for shows at the Fed Ex Arena and Graceland.:worship:)

If money is not an object for your family - I would suggest The Peabody Hotel. The ducks are priceless. Even if you don't stay there make sure to catch one of the two duck parades daily.

However, if money is a consideration - I'd stay in West Memphis Arkansas. It is where we usually stay. It is only a very few miles away from Beale Street -less than 15 minutes along the Interstate. It's the Ramada off the first exit into Arkansas. We especially enjoy the complimentary breakfast.

Hope this help broaden your options.

Southaven MS is right across the state line and only a few minutes from downtown. There is a Drury Inn, Comfort Suites and Courtyard by Marriot right off of Hwy 55 which runs right into Memphis.

Hi there! I suggest the Germantown/Cordova area, the Wolfchase area, or downtown. Also, the University of Memphis has a Holiday Inn that I suggest (it's very nice!). Don't give beggars money, don't ask beggars for directions, the area outside of Graceland isn't the best (fine during daytime) & don't go south of Beale street. We have the worst drivers. Watch out for red light runners.

I was looking for a hotel in the Memphis area for a hurricane evacuation a couple of years ago and some nice person on these boards recommended Olive Branch MS. I felt very safe with my children there. I'm not really sure how far away that is from what you will be doing, but I found it a nice area.

Thanks for the replies. We ended up bidding on Priceline. We got the Holiday Inn Select East on Poplar for $50/night. It has mixed reviews, but is a 3 star. From what I can tell, the area is safe.

It looks like it will be raining when we visit, so we will probably be taking the kids to indoor activities. Museums and what not.

You might check on the exhibits at the Pyramid. We went to a great exhibit on the Pharoahs there on our first anniversary (9 years ago).
Peabody Place is a great place to kill some time indoors. If you don't stay at the Peabody, you at least need to stop by and see the duckies. We have a tradition to eat lunch at Rendezvous and walk over to visit the ducks as we're leaving to head home. If you do get some "non-rainy" afternoon time, Beale Street is fairly tame in the afternoon to walk down with the kids and pop into some of the places for music. We were on the patio at Silky's one afternoon and there were lots of families out there. Oh, I am so ready to go back.

The Pyramid has been closed for years. Memphis has a nice Childrens Museum, we also have one of the top Zoos in the country. The Pink Palace Museum is pretty nice as well and it has a cool Imax theater that my kids love !!

The Holiday Inn East at Poplar/I-240 is not too bad, and it's in a fairly safe area of East Memphis. I work about a mile from there. There are several restaurants within a short driving distance from the hotel: Olive Garden, Bennigans, Houston's, Carrabbas, Corky's BBQ, Jason's Deli, Ruth's Chris, Flemings, P.F. Changs, McDonalds, Taco Bell, Chic-Fil-A, and a couple of independent places that are wonderful: Amerigo, Buckleys, and Folks Folly.

It's not really close to a lot of attractions, but it's very convenient as far as getting on/off interstate, etc.

If it happens to not rain, I more than HIGHLY recommend our zoo! It's fantastic! Indoor activities in case it rains - Children's Museum, Brooks Museum, Pink Palace, & the Civil Rights Museum.

Also, I would check and see what's going to be at The Orpheum, they do a summer movie series. Also check out Playhouse on the Square & Theatre Memphis. There's a LOT of talented actors and actresses in this city. :)

And coming here, of course, I recommend you eat some BBQ! My top suggestions are Germantown Commissary, Cozy Corner (my favorite is the turkey, but they don't sell that in the restaurant - only for catering), Central, and Corky's. My mouth is watering just thinking about it!!

Can anyone give me advice on where to stay IF ONLY going to Memphis for Graceland? We would NOT have a car, so we would be relying on taxi/towncar. Also, how far is the airport from Graceland?

It will be a quick plane trip on a Thursday in Oct., and returning home Friday late night.

Thanks!

OP - you got very lucky with Priceline. :) I used Priceline last October and got the Holiday Inn - Memphis Airport and it was awful!!! I LOVE Priceline and use it all the time (especially in the Chicago area) and never had a complaint until I stayed there. It was rated a 2 1/2 star hotel and it was horrible. Definitely do not stay there if you're looking for a hotel in Memphis.

My husband's parents used to live in Shelby County and his sister lived in Collierville. I MISS Corky's and Germantown Commissary sooooo much! His parents then lived in Olive Branch for a couple of years and now are in GA. His sister moved to NY. I am so ready to go back to Memphis just for the food!

Actually Memphis does have a great deal of cool stuff to do. I would add Mud Island to my tour. My kids loved the model of the Mississippi River. I really want to go back, but our next trip is Disney!!!

The area near Graceland and the airport are not very nice or safe areas. I would not recommend staying near either of those places. I would guess the airport is probably less than 15 minutes from Graceland. I worked down the street from Graceland for a doctor for years and drove past the airport on the way to our other offices. It is not far. I would recommend either staying more in the East memphis area or Southaven, MS area. I highly recommend the Wolfchase area due to several hotels and dining options but it is approx 30 minutes in traffic. I feel the Wolfchase area to be relatively safe. It's a city so there will be crime everywhere but some areas are really bad in Memphis.

Thank you for your reply! I was doing some web surfing and I came across a Hilton Garden Inn in Southaven. It looks nice from what I can tell. Would it be safe? They have complimentary shuttle to and from the airport which is a PLUS since there would be no car.

I have stayed there many times. It is very nice. There is a restaurant in the building that is great and you are near a lot of shopping.

Southaven, MS. There's a Hilton right by the Southaven Town Center and there are plenty places to eat around there. There's also the Drury Innn and a Hampton Inn near there. It's about 10-15 minutes from Graceland.

DO NOT stay in Whitehaven!!!
