Hotel fast passes - use suggestion

I haven't seen a post about the using the special on-property special fastpasses yet. Just got back from a stay 6/3 - 6/6 at the Grand Cal. We were issued 2 fast passes/person at check-in, though we had to remind the person checking us in to give them to us. Almost walked away without them, but my brother reminded me to ask before I did. Whew!

Passes are good until 9/11/11 and work on any fastpass ride plus the Little Mermaid. According to the passes, you do not need to show a room key to use them so we saved some of ours for later in the summer.

I think the best use is Star Tours. On Monday, a non magic morning day, they had the fastpass line available for hotel fast passes right at the open. Since regular fastpasses aren't issued yet, this meant pretty much no waiting. So a good strategy would be to line up at rope drop on a non magic morning day and make a bee line for Star Tours fastpass line with your hotel fastpass in hand. This is significantly different than the standby line, which on Monday started by the corn dog wagon. In fact, it may be best to send one person to check if the fastpass line is open before you commit to getting out of the standby line. We did go for Sunday's MM, but it didn't seem like the fastpass line was open during MM. On a MM, best to get there about 20-30 minutes early so you can be one of the first people on. Of course, I add the disclaimer that the way they operate the hotel fastpass could change at any time. We checked the fastpass wait on Sunday evening about a half an hour before the fireworks, and it was around 45 minutes. It's not altogether a bad thing to wait in at least the queue inside the building, as it's thoughtfully done, and there are lots of interesting things to see.

For us, we didn't use the special fastpasses on Little Mermaid at all as the ride was open for hotel guests starting at 9am (for a 10am open, need to show a room key), and the ride was a walk-on until around 9:30am when they started letting non-resort guests onto the ride. So unless you can't get over to DCA by 9am, I would save the special fastpass for other rides. The special fastpass is definitely worth using if you can't get there by 9:30, at least it was this weekend. The line looped through the paradise pier WOC viewing area and had multiple switchbacks. Very exposed and was running 2+ hours throughout a lot of the day. I doubt that will continue the whole summer though. It's a very fast loader and doesn't make you want to ride it over and over again like the Star Tours ride with it's different scenario possibilities. We all did think it was very cute and rode it a couple of times. When the line dies down, we'll probably ride it every DCA visit.

ETA: Nonsuch reports that although regular guests line up at 9:30 for LM, they don't let non hotel guests on the ride until 10am. You need to show a room key to get on, and you will bypass the line. I hadn't noticed that they weren't actually letting people on--I was totally overwhelmed by the crowd and skedaddled after riding to make it to TSMM rope drop.

Wow! I didn't know anything about this so thanks so much for posting!
Is it 2 fastpasses for each person in your room? (We are in a one bedroom at VGC so there are 5 of us.)
Also, is California Adventure always open for resort guests at 9:00am (for 10:00 opening) even if it isn't MM?
Thanks!

Thanks for the info! Looking forward to these fastpasses.

How was TSMM? It's such a draw at Park opening, so I'm wondering if LM is taking some of that away. Since we're a group of 4 adults, I'm thinking that once on LM will be enough for us.

Does it look like DCA is opening at 9 AM for resort guests every morning?

I don't know if the moderators can merge this thread with the other one of the same name - I seem to have a double post going. Not sure how that happened, but I'm sure it's something I did!

TSMM was still super busy, and the DCA in general got as busy as I've ever seen it as people got out of the LM line and stayed in the park. I agree that once is enough on the LM until this line dies down. It's a high capacity loader, I would bet that it would be fairly decent soon.

DCA was open at 9am on both Sunday and Monday. I assume it's going to be a summer long thing, but I can't say for sure.

2 fastpasses for everyone in the room except for infants under 3, who don't need one anyway.

DCA was open at 9am on both Sunday (with MM) and on Monday (no MM) so I think it's every day.

ETA: I'm sure about the DVC thing as we were also staying at VGC on points and got all the fastpasses (7 guests x 2 = 14 fastpasses).

WOW, never heard of this. I hope this shakes out when we are there.

It's interesting that at 9:30 they let regular guests start to ride LMAUA too.

How fast did the line build at that point, since many people don't know DCA opens at 9:30?

I should say that I am not 100% sure exactly when they started letting regular guests on, but it was definitely no later than 9:40. Line was instantly long, but hard to say exactly how long as they were making people walk a very circuitous route through the WOC viewing area by the time we exited. It would probably take you 10 - 15 minutes to walk that distance without stopping. When we checked mousewait about an hour later, it said the line was 2 hours. But this was opening weekend. I bet it goes down from here.

Do you recall what time you were exciting as they were setting up the extended queue?

Do you call what time you were exciting as they were setting up the extended queue?

I believe we left the ride at around 9:35-9:40. We got on around 9:25, then the ride went down just as we boarded and I'm not sure how long we sat there. When we got off, it was mobbed at the entrance, and they were starting to direct people through the extended queue. We walked over to the rope drop, which has moved beyond the LM ride to just before the bridge, and dispatched a runner from our group for WOC and Soarin. At that point I asked my husband what time it was and he told me 9:45.

TMI? Don't know if that helps at all.

Did you see or can you describe the HOtel only Fast Pass access line for LM?

I only have two mornings and would like to use the one MM we have at DL... but i'm not sure I can get the whole crew up that day early...

MM will likely open at 7am. If you don't make it, you will be wasting a great opportunity. However if you do, you can go to MM7-8, then pick up a FP ride another attraction or two and still get to the GCH entrance into DCA at 9am.

It sounds to me, Hotel guests enter at 9am, can get WoC Show Passes and ride LM. At 9:30 general guest come in, can ride Soarin, LM and get WoC show passes.

Sound right to you or anyone else who has done the early hotel guest entry?

Checked with my husband on this, neither of us have a clue. We never doubled back to see.

So do the WoC Show Passes follow that same sequence?

So... we can do LM and Soarin' both before 9:30 am?
