We're driving down this weekend (Jan 6-7), and was wondering if anyone had a feel (or any experience) about how many motel rooms are tied up with hurricane victims... A bit uncomfortable asking, but didnt really know if we'd be able to find rooms en route down (and back).

Just wondering... thnx.

Great question! We will be needing that information for our trip in late February. Looking forward to anyone's opinion.

I'd like to know, too, as well as availability of gasoline. We take I-10 to I-12 (Baton Rouge to Slidell) and back on I-10.

We opted to fly last month because we were concerned about overnight lodging and gas being redily available. Hopefully everything will be well for our trip in June.

Right now, I would gas up before hitting New Orleans, in Kenner or Metairie, as New Orleans gas stations are mostly closed right now. Slidell, I wouldn't chance it. No telling if they will be open in June, as they were hit pretty hard. Otherwise, you should be fine.

Hi... me again.

When I log onto Orbiz or Travelocity, everything looks to be relatively 'normal' in Tallahasse, Mobile, Gulfport, (etc), with some hotels showing 'no availability'. I just can't truly tell (short of calling the places directly) which ones actually have lodging to let.

Anybody made the Gulf Coast drive this winter????

on a couple of the links that I have - they are saying that most of the New Orleans hotels are up and need business badly....

Hi there!!

We drove from Houston to Destin, FL the middle of September (about 3 weeks after Katrina). There was a bridge out on the border of MS and AL, but that should be fine by now. We had filled our tank before Baton Rouge (Lafayette, LA), then did not need gas until we were in Destin. The roads for us were very full (with cars, but also lots of debris) on I-12. It should be much better now. Our friends just came back from WDW and got a hotel just after Mobile, AL which is about 7 hours from Houston. Most everything after Mobile had rooms. We did not have trouble finding gas. I would think that if we did not have trouble with gas 3 weeks after the hurricane, you all should be fine with the gas supply.

I think our family are suckers for punishment, we drive straight through to WDW from Houston--15 long hours, but then a nice long time to relax at WDW!!

Good luck with all of your trip planning!!
