Hot water heater question

A few months ago, the pilot on my hot water heater went out. No biggie, since my neighbors work for the gas company, I just called them to relight it.

It went out again Saturday night, and again sometime during the night last night. The neighbor relit it for me Sunday morning and I was able to get it lit this morning, but after my shower and before I left for work, it appeared to be out again.

I'm going to call my neighbor when I get home, but was curious if anyone had any ideas what the problem could be? It's only 2 or 3 years old, not in a drafty area.

And no, there's no smell of gas...

ETA, heat and hot water are the only gas-fired things...everything else is electric.

Also, heating/ac guy was at the house on Saturday for "spring maintenance", but I don't think he did anything with the water heater.

Why do you need to heat hot water? Hasn't it already been heated, being hot and all? :rotfl:

Sorry, I couldn't resist! No ideas what it could be, I'd definatly have someone come out and look at it, something isn't right.

:p Smartypants. :p

It could be the thermocouple is going bad. Thats the first thing I check when water heater problems come up.

could be a problem with the flue. We had some debris in our flue in Ohio which caused the safety mechanism on the heater to shut off the pilot and the gas. Get it checked out.

Okay, so do I call:
a) the heating/ac company that installed it 2-3 years ago?
b) gas company?
c) neighbors who work for gas company?
d) ex-husband who does heating and ac?

I would call the company that did the install and check warranty information first, unless you already know the warranty is past. IF you are no longer covered, and ex hubby will work on it for you, then I would go with him, it'll probably be cheaper that way. I know around here it is around 60 per hour for service calls, and more for emergency calls which is most likely what they would classify this situation as. Hope you can get it fixed quickly!
