Stinging Debate
Parents Divided Over Practice of ‘Hot Saucing’ as a Form of Discipline

Aug. 24, 2004 — The practice of "hot saucing" a child's tongue as a method of discipline may seem cruel to some parents, but those who regularly use the punishment say it teaches their charges valuable and long-lasting lessons.

Lisa Whelchel, who played Blair on the popular 1980s TV series Facts of Life, is an advocate and practitioner of "hot saucing." Whelchel, the author of Creative Correction: Extraordinary Ideas for Everyday Discipline, says the practice worked for her children when other disciplinary actions did not.

"It does sting and the memory stays with them so that the next time they may actually have some self-control and stop before they lie or bite or something like that," Whelchel said on ABC News' Good Morning America.

I don't agree with it. But that is what my neighbor did to her girls when they were growing up.
Yikes

It doesn't sound much worse than the soap my mom used... But then, I've never had hot sauce so I don't know what it tastes like.

Maybe she should have added "And, it doesn't leave bruises!"

I think that is plain torture.

We were just talking about this on another board I'm on.

I didn't see the GMA show this morning, but read an article in the Washington Post w/ several quotes from "Blair". Apparently, not only does she use the hot sauce, but clothespins on the tongue as well.

I know some who switched from soap (due to possible allergic reaction to the ingredients in it) to pepper. Never heard of hot sauce. It seems radical to me and I am not against corporal punishment. Interesting.

It's not something I could ever do. It seems cruel to me.

I had friends that did this. They only did it once and the problem was over. Mind you this was 10 year old who knew better and they felt as though they had tried everything!
Like I said it worked the first time.
ITA with Katerkat, I had my mouth washed out with soap and I swear I can still taste that!

The clothepin idea really bothers me, that is just painful. Hot sauce may sting a little but I dont think it would hurt nearly as bad as a clothes pin ( YIKES never heard of that before today)

unfortunately, there are a lot of worse things out there than hot sauceing a tongue. Frankly, I would have prefered that than what I got.

You take the good,
You take the bad,
You take it all,
And then you add...

Some A1 Bold and Spicy Discipline Sauce.

Yummy!

My mom used to just make me drink something I didn't like, like lime juice. Taught me to mind my manners real quick.

I just have to wonder if hot sauce might be a little harsh on the digestive systems of little ones? I suppose if the parent does not overdo it, and the kid just gets a taste it's not too horrible. But I worry some might overdo it...

Clothespins on the tongue is downright cruel.

I can fondly remember getting soap and pepper. I still envision the taste of Irish Spring or Safeguard! I only had pepper a few times! I don't think hot sauce is quite as torturous as an a** whooping or getting smacked on the face. I would never think of hitting my kids on the face, but as a last resort I may try the hot sauce. Good thing is...my kids are never that bad to deserve these methods of discipline.

Its...its...soap poisoning... "the Christmas Story" Love that part. I thing FTR that I would rather a clothespin than a hot hot sauce.

Oh the things I sit around thinking when my van is in the shop!

lol at the FOL theme song redone!!

my sil did the hot sauce (Tobasco) with my nephew when he was around 3ish and began with the "storytelling, tattletailing and what nots" and it worked. We're not talking blobs and blobs of the stuff but more like a dot on the finger and then into the mouth. After a time or 2 all she had to do was show him the bottle and that was enough.

Clothespins are another matter all together....

I can't imagine forcing something into my child's mouth. How awful.

Nor could I. :(

My parents never forced anything in my mouth or my siblings mouths either. There are more effective ways to discipline, imo, you just have to be patient enough to stick with it.

My husbands parents did that to him, and now he puts Tabasco sauce on pretty much everything he eats. He loves it. I don't agree with it but it wouldn't work on my kids anyways since they've inherited mine and their dads taste for all things spicy.

"Whelchel said hot saucing works better than traditional spanking when it comes to offenses related to the child's mouth.

"It's a logical consequence. If you cause somebody pain, either by the words you say by lying and not being a trustworthy person or by biting, this is a logical consequence. It's your mouth that's the offender," she said. "

I actually laughed when I read this. It would certainly STILL work with my ticky eater J.C. If I put anything he didn't like on his tongue he would watch his mouth super quickly.

You know I sprinkle peppar sauce in the areas where I don't want my cats to go and it works like a charm.
