Where I grew up, we ate hot dogs with hot dog sauce, which is kind of like chili but (a) no beans, (b) finer ground beef and slow-cooked to where it almost looks like a spaghetti sauce, but not as "tomatoey." That's still my favorite kind of hot dog, but can't find them that way around here.

Close second is a Cincinnati cheese coney, made with Skyline or Gold Star Chili. Cincinnati chili is interesting stuff--cinnamon, cloves and other spices, but not sweet. Great with shredded sharp cheddar on top.

Otherwise, give me mustard and sweet relish.

Cincinnati chili is the best! I had it for dinner last night.:goodvibes Have you ever had Goetta? Its another Cincinnati specialty.

Mustard always. Chili, sauerkraut, cheese if it is available.

We had hot dogs tonight for the first time in months! Tonight I had mustard, sweet relish, and onion.

Other times I might have sauerkraut, mustard and onion.

We also do chili (no beans) and onion.

In our house, ketchup on a hot dog is considered TABOO !

I like BBQ sauce, if I am going all out I will have BBQ sauce, chopped onions and cheddar cheese.

I like to put a lot of ketchup and a little mustard sometimes.

I don't understand when people say 'nothing should be put on hot dogs' or 'xxx doesn't belong on hot dogs' I want to say, put whatever the hell you want on hot dogs. You're not a hot dog God, so shut up.

About the mayo on hotdogs:

When I lived in Ecuador (and when I visited Colombia), I learned that mayo on hotdogs is the 'normal' way they are eaten there. And they would often be boiled in Coca-Cola. The people I knew were surprised with the idea of eating mustard on hotdogs, they had never heard of it.

If you put ketchup on a hotdog in my family (immediate adn extended family) that is a serious consideration to be thrown out of the family;)

My family takes their hotdogs very seriously (I guess thats what happens when your entire family grows up in NY:confused3...i grew up in virginia....i dont take hotdogs or pizza as seriously as eveyrone else in my family)

Hotdogs for our family are either:
Mustard/sauerkraut
Mustard/relish
Mustard/ white onions

disfan07 - I like that your family has strong opinions on hotdogs! My family...there are no rules!

Dad likes chili & cheese
Mom likes sweet relish
Husband likes BURNT dogs, mustard and onion (when I can get him to eat them)
Nephew likes chili, cheese, mustard & onions
Sisters like Ketchup & mustard
Daughter likes mustard only

Me?....I'm a good southern girl - I like slaw on my dogs!

Thanks for posting this poll - it was fun!

Has anyone seen the "No reservations" where Anthony visits Chicago and goes to Hot Dougs? They put Foi grois (i know my spelling is wrong) on the hot dogs.

Why oh why do I open food threads after 10pm? I know I am just going to end up hungry

I love ketchup and onions on my hot dogs. I also like relish but not the kid that you are thinking about in the poll. I use sweet pepper and onion relish or charred pineapple relish. I never thought pineapple would taste good on a dog but I grabbed it by accident one time and now I use it all the time.

While I will eat hot dogs boiled, steamed, microwaved or seared on a flat top grill, my most favorite hot dog is when it comes off the grill, just this side of charred! I love all the burned blackness on a dog from the grill.

Okay, maybe I am guilty of being a hot dog god(dess), but ketchup on hotdogs is just wrong!

Mustard, Onion, Chili, Slaw....
Any combination of the above.

I don't often have a slaw-dog,
Many people have probably not tried slaw on a dog.
But, really, if one happens to have some decent shredded cole-slaw available, it's really good!

I'll fess up: Never tried, or even heard of slaw on a hotdog. I like slaw so I could see how it might be good. What I don't understand is the combination of slaw and some of the other stuff(chili, for instance). :confused3

I LOVE mayo on a hot dog! Maybe it's an Alabama thing?

I also like to put avacado and tomatoes. My husband calls that the California Dog.

Well dang, DH has been telling me for years that I'm the only person on the planet who puts mayo on a hot dog, and now this poll is going to prove him right! :lmao:

I do put ketchup and onions on there too, and sweet relish if it's available. :flower3:

I'm from PA and LOVE mayo on a hot dog. Mayo belongs on all things that are sandwiches! :thumbsup2

I always put on onions, relish, and cheese as well. Sometimes I'll throw some ketchup on. Yum.

My husband called a little while ago and asked what I was making for dinner. Umm Hot-dogs! I asked him to pick up some cole slaw from our favorite deli that makes it so delicious. First time trying cole slaw on a hot dog!

Would you put mustard on the dog before the slaw? I'm thinking no but maybe...

Barbeque sauce... then coleslaw... mmmm mmmm GOOD! :thumbsup2 :flower3:

I'm a Carolina girl. When I make a hot dog it's "all the way". The order I like it placed on my dog is: yellow mustard, a little ketchup, slaw, chili (no beans), raw sweet onion on top. Yum!

Now for a following up questions:

Do you know of a good prepared saurkraut &/or slaw? Can not prepare anything on site, has to come ready to go?
