Can anyone give me advice on medical treatment in Florida

first time to the states and just wondered how you go over there
if anyone falls ill and the costs ect.

I suppose the E111 is not relevant over there ?

What sort of cost is it to see a doctor about anything ?

thanks

Lee

It is very expensive if you need treatment thats why you need good health insurance. There are walk in centres you can go to, there is one on i drive which we have had to use a couple of times. My back went one time i was there i was in the room half an hour they injected me and gave me some tablets it cost us over $100 but we did claim it back.

We've had to use the doctor several times for our DD's. We used a medical facility which is not too far from WDW, I can't rememeber the name. You do not need an appointment, as it's a walk in. The cost depends on what type of treatment is required and if you need to fill a prescription. For us it's never been under $100 plus prescription charges. You have to pay before you can see the doctor and then you claim the money back on your insurance when you get back. If you do have to see a doctor make sure that you get all the relevant paperwork.

You're right, the E111 can't be used in the U.S.

Hope this helps. I'm sure that someone else will be along, who'll be able to give you additional information! :goodvibes

Health care in the US is VERY expensive, hence why it is essential that everyone in your party has travel insurance. We have, unfortunately, had to use doctors and hospitals on several of our trips over. But it is very easy.

You can either get in touch through your hotel or tour rep, to a local doctor, or pop into one of the Walk In Medical Centres over there - I know of one in LBV in Orlando, near the IHop at Xroads.

Make sure you have a credit card because you do have to pay for these walk-in clinics, around $90 for a straightforward exam seems to be the norm. Medication on prescription is much more expensive than we're used to - we seem to have paid around $45+ for antibiotics over the years.

Don't worry - everything works very smoothly. If, god forbid, you were to need emergency treatment (we have when DD on our first trip couldn't breath with croup), the hospitals are very friendly, caring and welcoming. Given it was very early in the morning, we had no documentation on us, but they were happy for us to get Katie treated and then ring with our insurance details later. We didn't even have the thought to ring our travel insurance people because we were so concerned about Katie, everything else went out of her minds!

This highlights the need to take a credit card, even if you don't usually have one, or plan to use one in Orlando. You never know what might happen and as it's been said above even the most basic medical help is expensive.

The on-site medical reponse in WDW is very good. There are first aid stations in all the parks with registered nurses on duty and Reedy Creek Paramedics are available if required. I'm sure any treatment given on-site is free, including transfer to hospital by the Reedy Creek ambulance if required. Transfer is usually to Celebration Hospital where you will be charged for any treatment.

Agree with everyone - it is essential that everyone in your party has good travel insurance that has good medical coverage. If any of you have "existing conditions" (i.e. reocvering from cancer or a heart attack, for instance), then make sure that these are declared to your ensurer: if they are not, they may (will probably) not cover you for any costs relating to that condition.

E111 is not relevant ANYWHERE any more - if you are travelling to Europe, make sure that you (and your family) have EHIC cards (http://www.dh.gov.uk/PolicyAndGuidance/HealthAdviceForTravellers/fs/en - can be applied for online). The E111 forms are nolonger valid. Obviously EHIC cards do not cover you in the US (they are Europe only). Would always travel with travel insurance in addition to a EHIC anyway...
