Did anyone find horseflies at your resort ?
They do bite and leave a nice weldt.

I have read about horseflies at POFQ this past May.
Other resorts too ?

Are horseflies a summer type bug at WDW ?

Thanks !

Well, we're just back on Tuesday and both DDs and I were bitten by something. Most of the welts look like mosquito bite or something but I have one on my Achilles tendon that itches still and is different. It may be a horse fly. We were at the Contemporary Resort an I did see a few of them flying around.

When we were there a few weeks ago, we saw lots of yellow horsefly type things. My dd was bitten at AK while waiting for Goofy to come back out for an autograph, and the cm said the flies were biting and they hurt. He told us to go to first aid and get some cream or something, but dd was fine by the time we finished up with Goofy. I saw them flying around, but was never bitten. Makes the love bugs look good :thumbsup2
We stayed at BLT, but I didnt notice them there.

We were there the week of May 19th and I saw them at Ft Wilderness and CBR. I got bit twice at FW, and since I have an allergy to them, my bites swelled up to the size of a golf ball. One got into our room, but DH killed it before it got anyone.

There have been a few news reports on the Orlando station sites about yellow flies being around especially in Brevard County. They look like deer flies and tend to bite legs. In Florida they are most common April through June.

Yes, the news had reports on an unusually large number this year, especially late may and into June. We have seen a few at Magic Kingdom too!
Also a couple at Shades of Green Resort as well - only person bitten by any bugs this trip was ME :confused3 Still, at least DH and kiddos were spared! We used the natural wipes without DEET, apparently DEET does not work well for those perky yellow flies. So that is what I get for making sure the rest of the family were wiped down!
Sigh. BUGS. But we STILL had an awesome vacay!:cool1:

We left POFQ on May 1 and didn't see any horse flies, didn't get bit, etc. Had a wonderful experience there and would definately go again.

We get horse flies here in the Northeast every summer. They are huge.Hence the name Horse fly. You will know when you are bitten. They hurt. But I have never seen a yellow one. They are usually big black things. In all my trips to Florida over the years I have never come across them there.

Oh ya! We were there (POR) May 8-17, and really noticed them close to end of our stay. They were yellow and very similar to the black flies that are common in Northern Ontario. They seemed to be more around the pool area and absolutely loved my ankles!!:headache:

Funny thing, though, they bites didn't swell up and get itchy until after I got home. :confused3

In GA we call them yellow flies or biting flies. The horse fly has a body that's about hte size of a nickel or larger and is black like a house fly on steroids :)

They are yellow flys and they are very bad this year. The are at their worst between 4 and 8 pm. The tend to be near water, but can be anywhere.

You will know if you get bitten. The bite stings. It's not like a bee sting, but you'll definitely know something got you.

Once one bites you, it will continue to try to bite you. They don't give up easily.

One bit me about two weeks ago. I seem to be somewhat allergic to them because my let swelled up and it oozed for several days. It is just know going away. So, tonight, I went out to get my dogs and got another two bites. Great!

This is the worst I've ever seen these things in the past six years I've lived in Florida.

We were there from May 2-8 and had no problems. It's not the resort, it's Florida, bugs don't care what resort you're at. If you're worried maybe bring some outdoor Deet?

As the PP stated you can be anywhere in FL and get biten by one. I'm sure they hurt, though I've never been biten by a yellow fly. I wish I could say the same about a horse fly. That hurt about as bad as getting a shot.

It's just something we live with in the south. :confused3

Chiggers, Horseflies, Wasps, Bees, Gnat swarms. It just comes with the territory. Speaking of gnats, how are they this year?

I have fond memories of south Georgia and breathing in bugs all week. Thank god for screened in porches. :rotfl:

I didn't see any last month. I guess we were lucky. Although my DD and DS got some mosquito bites and my DH and DD got the heat rash.

Didn't see any gnats and only a very few lovebugs. I actually saw mosquitos (usually as they were landing on DD to bite) but the worst "pest" we saw was the snake that dropped from the rock arches as you enter AK on Sunday! It was one of those "did I really see that ?" moments. DH (deathly afraid, naturally he sees it happen) saw it and froze, then I watched it stay perfectly still after landing in some underbrush, then slither off. Think it was a young king snake, it was definitely non poisonous, but if it had landed on this rather large, very loud obnoxious lady that was walking by as it dropped it would have been a disaster! :lmao:

Thanks for all the bug info.

I think we will get soem sort of bug spray/wpies for our legs.feet and arms. :goodvibes
