My last trip has one of those horror stories that ended in hospital and bad memories, what tips have you got to make the next one, super special and memory making in a good way?
I think it's good to try to make a make-up trip feel different in some way, whether it's a different resort, time of year, special event, even a new restaurant you have been wanting to try, etc.

I agree with this. If finances allow, do something to really treat yourself. Go on a special tour, fireworks cruise, special meal, upgrade your resort/room from last trip....etc. I hope you have a better experience next time.
My gut reaction is to suggest that you don't try to replicate the trip you were "supposed" to have. I'd book a different resort, totally take a fresh start on this trip.
However, that advice is 100% opposite if 1) you don't enjoy the planning part and don't want to start all over, or 2) you have a long-time favorite resort booked last time and you want to finally get that good stay you've been waiting for.
I'm sorry you're first trip was ruined and hope you have a fantastic time the second go 'round!
When you book your trip let Disney know that this is a do over. It's amazing some of the little touches they add sometimes to bring happiness back to people.

I mentioned to the CM on the phone while booking that I had just quit my job and needed to get away when she asked why I was visiting WDW. When I got to the hotel I got an "I'm celebrating" button with a handwritten 'freedom' underneath. Cracked me up and made me feel a lot better about walking out on a decent-paying job.

I can relate. In December of 2012, I visited and stayed off site at a hotel in what turned out to be a not so nice area (witnessed a drug deal at the hotel parking lot). I have kidney disease. My edema (water retention) was bad to where I couldn't breathe. Could only walk around 50 feet and I would have to stop and catch my breathe. To add on I am from Newtown, CT and while I was down there I was driving to Jupiter where I lived for 18 months. I was at a rest stop on Florida's Turnpike and saw posts about a school shooting in my home town. Turned out to be the 26 person school schooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in my hometown. Needless to say not a great trip. Because I started dalysis in 2013, I skipped as I had just started so I made up for it in 2014 by going twice. I'm going again this July
I'd see if theres something you've always wanted to do there that you never would because its too much of a splurge. Like take in one of those really high end restaurants or something, but I agree with others don't attempt to make the trip the perfect version of your first one. Make it something new and special.
CTDisneyfan816, that just sounds awful when i saw some of the offsite areas I felt uneasy at times and hopefully no one you knew was seriously effected by the shooting.
Disney has always been my happy place, but my memories are not great. Just looking at the photos makes me burst into tears... But to be honest, now that I know she will be okay, I want to go back and thank all the hospital staff and people who I met, who really did help me. I could never have gotten through it sane without them
mum feels guilty that she "ruined" my birthday trip and wants me to go back to do all the things we planned.
I think your ideas are great! I had planned everything I wanted to do, stayed at the YC, cruises, cakes, room decorations and all that. So this time, I might just "let it go". I really want to swim
In SAB, so maybe try BC, same but different you know

Just realize that the rides are more fun than laying about in a hospital bed (most of them, anyway) and the trip to WDW will cost much less than a stay in the hospital.
