Hoping this doesn't open a can of worms, but for those that used limewire - now what?

I actually e-mailed the artist to see where I could buy them and she said limewire was the only place. I don't know why those two songs aren't available for purchase.

Some upcoming artists distribute all their music this way -- to them the exposure is worth the monetary loss. Limewire (and bittorrent, etc) are completely legitimate ways of sharing and distributing media -- it's the type of media that causes problems. :)

this is true. the dixie chicks did a TV interview several years ago, and in this interview they told that, even with one of the best lawyers in the music business, they only make TWELVE CENTS per album sold. this is one reason why concert ticket prices are so high-it's how the artists make their money. they make next to NOTHING on album sales. almost all money from album sales goes to the record companies. have i d'l music illegally in the past? darn right i did! on both napster and winmx. would i do it today? no, because it sets a bad example for my daughter.

As of July 2010, with 30.5 million certified albums,[3] and sales of 26,733,000 albums in the U.S....
A dang shame that they make so little. $0.12 per album with only a mere handful sold in the US of 26.7 million and only making a pitiful $3.2 million. Dang close to poverty level....

This topic came up in the staff room the other day, the consesus was frostwire is the best replacement and most similar to what limewire was.

I buy my music from Amazon or Itunes. I know too many people who ended up paying out more to fix their computers due to viruses and such. Also not worth the risk of paying outrageous fines for piracy.

I agree I would rather buy legal downloads than risk computer viruses or fines. A couple of years back there was a woman who was working with me as an office assistant and she told me how her teenage daughter was always getting music off Limewire. A month or so later she was bugging our IT guy to look at her daughter's computer. The guy did look at it and told her the viruses were chalked up due to Limewire and that the computer need extensive repairs. Our former IT guy did repairs for people on the side and I remember it took him nearly two weeks to get the daughter's compute running again.

For $1 per song, just do the right thing and pay for it. I find that I only buy a few songs at a time so it really isn't that much money and then I am not ripping the artists off by taking their music for free.

Just to chime in on the ticket prices comment... Artists make almost nothing off of CD or song sales unless they are producing it themselves with an independent record label. I buy CDs from local bands, use private torrents for national artists, and go support artists in concert whenever I have the chance, knowing that they're actually receiving payment from a chunk of my ticket.

Emusic.com doesn't have as great of a selection as Itunes etc. but it's very inexpensive. We have a monthly subscription for $11.99 and get 40 songs each month. Pretty good deal.

Funny limewire story though. I used it once to download two songs and was Super nervous about it. The reason I did it is because my daughter really wanted the two songs from Kiki's Delivery Service (I'm Soarin', and I'm Gonna Fly). I actually e-mailed the artist to see where I could buy them and she said limewire was the only place. I don't know why those two songs aren't available for purchase.

I second emusic. There's not a lot of top 40 but there are tons of great artists. I've discovered some great stuff there!

My girls have been using Frostwire for a while. Not sure why they switched from Limewire, but they are happy with Frostwire.

I use http://www.mp3fiesta.com/

40 cents a song. I use a virtual credit card number since I believe it's a Russian website.

The fact it is based in Russia should give away the fact that this website is running an illegal business. And you're paying them for stolen merchandise. Might as well just download it for free at that point.

It's legal in Russia (which is where most of those type of sites are located).

No, its not legal in Russia. But its harder to stop it in Russia.
