Hoping this doesn't open a can of worms, but for those that used limewire - now what?

Amazon.com, itunes store, walmart.com and rhapsody all offer songs for around ninety nine cents or less. File sharing of copywritten music is a violation of the law. Thats why limewire and others like it have been shut down. I dont think its a good idea to share ideas on how to get around the law on the disboards.

Its the people who illegally download music and don't pay for it who are responsible in part for the jacked up concert ticket prices. Artists deserve to get paid like everyone else, even though they dont get all 99 cents of it they still get something. I use I-Tunes and amazon.com.

LOL! You knew that lots of people would chime in about the legality thing. I honestly don't know what I'll do. I used limewire and will admit it.

I didn't use limewire but I also don't think file sharing is what caused prices of concert tickets/tshirts, etc. to increase. I think that is artist/manager/promoter/venue greed. Those tickets have been at astronomical levels before limewire/itunes, etc. were out there!

I buy my music from Amazon or Itunes. I know too many people who ended up paying out more to fix their computers due to viruses and such. Also not worth the risk of paying outrageous fines for piracy.

The big music sites are all private and invite only. Been that way for years.

Back in college we used to have cd burning parties. Everyone would bring their cd's and people would go through figure out the ones they wanted a copy of and we would make copies. That way we had multiple "offsite Backups" of the music...Legeal probably not but no different than copying tapes and vhs.

artist get basically NOTHING for cd sales.
if you realy lke artists buy albums directly form them (cd or digital), buy shirts, but posters, anything directly form them, not from a store, you arent doing anything but helping the already TERRIBLE record industry.
maybe if labels would release good ALBUMS not a few good songs, people would PAY for music.
and downloading music does not increase ticket sales,

BUY ONLY INDEPENDENT ALBUMS! :)

Agreed.

itunes.com--my fav

Artists who write their own music DO get royalties from song sales.

I used to get mine somewhere for 10 cents a song..(Rarely ever have the need or want for an entire album..) Was I doing something wrong - even though I was paying?

Can't remember the name of the site - haven't used it in at least 3 years..:confused3

Probably a Russian site called allofmp3. Nice because, like newsgroups, it required no uploading. I would avoid any method that involves the user having to share, like bittorrent.

Emusic.com doesn't have as great of a selection as Itunes etc. but it's very inexpensive. We have a monthly subscription for $11.99 and get 40 songs each month. Pretty good deal.

Funny limewire story though. I used it once to download two songs and was Super nervous about it. The reason I did it is because my daughter really wanted the two songs from Kiki's Delivery Service (I'm Soarin', and I'm Gonna Fly). I actually e-mailed the artist to see where I could buy them and she said limewire was the only place. I don't know why those two songs aren't available for purchase.

this is true. the dixie chicks did a TV interview several years ago, and in this interview they told that, even with one of the best lawyers in the music business, they only make TWELVE CENTS per album sold. this is one reason why concert ticket prices are so high-it's how the artists make their money. they make next to NOTHING on album sales. almost all money from album sales goes to the record companies. have i d'l music illegally in the past? darn right i did! on both napster and winmx. would i do it today? no, because it sets a bad example for my daughter.

I use sites like Pandora to listen to a lot of music for free, and youtube. If I like songs enough I buy a CD, I like to have my music in a format where I can back it up, put in on whatever device I want, and not have to worry about companies failing, DRM, etc.

But I do listen to a lot of anime and video game soundtracks. I buy legal copies when I can find them in the stores, but 99% of the time there is no way to get that music without paying $50 a disk at a convention or from an online import store. At that point, I frankly have no qualms about going in with friends to buy a single CD and sharing it amongst ourselves, or just downright torrenting it. If the publishers refuse to release it in the States where I can buy it, then I'm not taking any profit from them by downloading it. I don't see why I should go out of my way to buy something for an inflated price when the publisher chooses not to market it to me.

Same thing with out of print gaming books and computer games I sometimes download. If nobody is making money off of it, I don't see how it can be illegal to distribute it for free.

If it's just for listening at home or around your computer, I love Pandora. They let you listen for 40 hours per month for free. There is a buy icon on each of the songs, but I've never purchased from them.

We use Itunes or Amazon to buy music.
