Believe it or not there are still seatings available for HDD at the end of Jan.

If we do the 7:15 seating can we then get to a place in FW to see the EWP when it passes at 9:45?
We are also planning on doing Whispering Canyon for dinner and part of me thinks we might want to plan on seeing the EWP from there since we can kill any extra time indoors instead of outdoors.

What do you think?

Either way works. Figure there is a 9:30 HDD so your show will be out before that. The beach is right next to Pioneer Hall so it would take you about 2 minutes to walk over there, you would definetley have some time to kill before 9:45. If you plan to do it on the night you are at the Canyon, you will, as you stated be able to kill time inside, might be a little warmer for you that time of year. But either option will work out for you.

We do this every time we go to the 7:15 Hoop:

There is a "hay-ride" (no actual HAY is used, but a wooden wagon with benches all around, drawn by two horses) that departs from in front of Pioneer Hall (the Hoop's theater) at about 9:30. The driver heads the horses down to a secluded section of beach and stops so the riders can view the EWP in private. Its really kind of special.

The hay-ride costs about $8 per person (or so) and lasts about an hour.
When not watching the EWP, the driver takes you thru the campgrounds.
She/he will answer WDW (and horse) questions and the kids seem to love it.
There are even a couple of blankets provided on colder nights.
No reservations are required, just walk up to the hitch area with the sign that says "Hay-rides" (not "Carriage Rides", that's another attraction.)

This has been going on for decades and most guests don't even know about it.
