Burl Ives was a hugely popular Folk Singer who moonlighted as an actor on Broadway and in Hollywood, playing Big Daddy in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with Elizabeth Tayolr and Paul Newman, starring in Disney's Summer Magic with Haley Mills, winning the Academy Award for Best supporting actor in The Big Country featuring Gregory Peck, Jean Simmons, Charlton Heston and playing Sheriff in East of Eden with James Dean.




Ives is often remembered for his voice-over work as Sam the Snowman, narrator of the classic 1964 Christmas television special Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, which continues to air annually around Christmas.

Did anyone mention Lavender Blue from the movie So Dear to My Heart? He really had a great and unmistakable voice. I know Hollly Jolly Chirstmas was mentioned but like the poster said it is not Christmas until that song comes on.

I remember being shocked when Ives was cast against type, playing a bigoted Senator who supported the burgeoning Ku Klux Klan in the 1977 miniseries "Roots". It was very odd to hear that kindly, gentle voice saying really horrible things.
