In looking at the HKDL website and reading over some of the news, I am curious about the choice of castle for this park. It appears from all information that the castle will be a copy of the one at DL California. While it is okay, I think it pales (and not in terms of fading paint) in comparison to the other three in existence. Disney really went over the top with the most recent castle for the Paris park. To me the big bold castle just pulls you down Main Street, is impressive to behold, and evokes more of a fairy tale atmosphere than a miniature.

So my question, finally, is why do you think (or is there an official reason) why Disney has chosen to go small this time? Surely it can't save that much money to make the castle shorter.

I doubt that it has anything to do with money. The park in Hong Kong is a fairly small park, and a great deal of it will be under cover to protect the park against the city's high humidity and heavy rains. The smaller castle likely fits better with the scale of everything else.

Although disney are recreating the DL castle. I belive they are making it abit bigger than the one at DL.

Original plans for DLP were to build a bigger version of the DL castle. This can be seen in the Walt Disney Imagineering Book.So my guess is they already had a design for a bigger DL castle so they just dug it out for HK to save $$
