Any suggestions for a romantic resort? We are not sure if we want to stay at a large resort or at a more intimate resort that has cottages.

What I do know is that I can not wait!! :cool1:

We were just in Maui in June. Although we stay in our families’ condo, I do suggest that you may want something a bit more intimate. The large resorts/hotels are beautiful, but very busy. We honeymooned ourselves three years ago for two weeks and loved it. Have a wonderful trip. :flower:

We stayed at the Hyatt Regency on Maui and I think it is the most beautiful hotel on the planet (granted this was 1997 and I was 12 at the time). It is a huge hotel but there is snorkling/diving right off the beach and everything. We saw a giant sea turtle while we were snorkling right there. The pool is amazing too. I believe there is a waterslide (the things I remember  ).

Also stayed at the Hyatt Regency on Kaui too- beautiful, beautiful hotel as well.

The Hyatt Regency in Maui is absolutely beautiful - fun, too. There are two pools connected by a swim through cave with a swim up bar. It does have a GREAT waterslide. You can rent kayaks there and go snorkeling also.

Some friends just got back from their honeymoon at the Royal Lahaina, but I haven't had a chance to see them yet to find out how they liked the hotel. I will post when I talk to them.

On Maui I would recommend the Wailea area, but it's pricey. Kapalua is also nice, but windy. Ka'anapali, where the majority of the hotels are, is really touristy. It's fun, but I would not go there for a honeymoon.

The Four Seasons, the Kea Lani & Kapalua Resort on Maui are the most romantic. Kea Lani is an all suites hotel, which is nice. Kapalua also rents condos and houses with ocean views. I love the Grand Wailea too, but like the Hyatt, it's packed with kids because of their awesome pools.

We've also rented small houses on the beach on Oahu, Kauai and Hawaii. You usually don't get a pool, but we've stayed in a couple private beach front cottages on the Big Island that are great for honeymooners.

IMO, the most romantic resort in all the islands is the Four Seasons Hualalai on the Big Island. The rooms are in duplex/fourplex buildings scattered along the coast. The ground floor rooms have an indoor/outdoor shower (completely private). The resort is beyond beautiful. Love it there! If money is available, it's the perfect honeymoon destination.

During the winter months, I would definately opt for Wailea. The beaches are beautiful. There are some pricey resorts there and then there are those that are less pricey. We stayed at the Outrigger which is now the Marriott. It wasn't luxurious but it was lovely. If you enjoy more activity, Ka'anapali would be my choice. It's closer to Lahaina Town. In the winter, the beach often erodes in Ka'anapali due to the shifting tides. The sand eventually gets redeposited but I have seen pictures where the water is almost up to the walkway. I would suggest you pick up Maui Revealed by Wizard Publications. You can find it in any book store. It will tell you everything you need to know about Maui. Additionally, there is a code where you can see not only excellent reviews of all of the hotels but ariel views as well.

Thanks for the ideas! Dawn, I will have to get that book.

Honu, would you recommend a honeymoon on the Big Island instead of Maui? I know my honey is interested in seeing the active volcano. Is there a ferry that connects the two islands?

DH and I honeymooned on both Maui and the Big Island, and both islands are so different, it's hard to tell you to pick one over the other. DH liked Maui better, and I liked the Big Island. If you can only swing a weeklong honeymoon, you should just pick one island. There are wonderful resorts in Kona on the Big Island--Four Seasons Hualalai (as Honu suggested), Kona Village Resort and on and on. Now, if you pressed me to pick one of the islands for a honeymoon, I'd probably tell you to go to Maui. It's more of what you think Hawaii will look like; Kona on the Big Island has a very primeval feel due to all the lava flows, while Hilo is very wet and rainy.

There isn't a ferry system running right now between Maui and the Big Island, but the Superferry is slated to start in 2007.
