Honey Baked Ham - cheaper alternative?

I went to Sam's Club today and couldn't find a ham with a purple foil wrap. All I saw was a gold wrap one. Could they have changed the wrap?

I've been purchasing Aldi's Appleton Farms hams for several years now. Right now the spiral sliced is $1.69/lb with glaze packet included.

Same here. I haven't bought any other ham for years.

I just made a store brand spiral ham in my crockpot this weekend. I put a cup of brown sugar on the bottom, placed the ham on top and then dumped a can of pineapple tidbits with juice on top. I did baste it a few times while it was cooking. It was ridiculously easy and my husband said it was the best ham he ever had. I think it was onsale for about $2/lb.

Thanks!! I'm going to try this. I'll bet it's really moist?

Most of your better store brand hams will say double glazed on them meaning they were glazed during the smoking of the ham and also come with glaze pack even if you dont intend to use the glaze pack you may want to still purchase the double glazed ham they usually can be found for around 2 dollars a pound during your major ham eating holidays

I'll be the dissenter. We have tried hams from Costco and the supermarket. They are okay. But the Honey Baked hams are really, really good. So I don't economize on the ham. I buy Honey Baked.

I agree- there is nothing like a honeybaked ham- no store bought ham compares. Whenever I go there I pick up a turkey breast too, love it! I never buy around the holidays though because I refuse to cook on a holiday, we go out to eat then.

I will also have to agree with that, in fact I never even liked ham until I tried honey baked ham. All my sil's serve other brands at their family dinners which remind me of why I didn't eat ham in the past.

Keep in mind, although there are dozens of brand choices with hams, they are all coming form only a handful of suppliers. Our local company brand labels for quite a few national brands.

Likewise, any fast food establishments using bacon (Papa Johns, Wendy's, Jack-in-the-box, etc.) are all coming from a handful of sources.

Along with major league stadiums and arenas, our local company supplies Disney Cruise Line as well.

This!! I work for a food manufacturer and while the formulations are different for many items and the customers' specifications, it's still made by the same people in the same building from mostly the same materials. So there are indeed variations, but a lot of those variations are quite slight. There just aren't that many plants that manufacture most of these food items.

^ That's what I wondered about ham too ^ since it's true with so very many products.

OP here. Appreciate all your thoughts and opinions, everyone!! :thumbsup2

We may be having about 40 people this year :scared1: :rotfl:

If so, I definitely won't be getting a honey baked ham. (otherwise I still might consider it....)

Happy Easter, all!
