Honda Odyssey vs Chrysler Town & Country

My Dodge Caravan was nothing but trouble and needed many major repairs. I would go with a Honda any day. In fact we now own two Hondas and will NEVER buy another Dodge again, may never buy anything except Honda ever again.

I can's say anything good or bad about other vans because the only one I've ever owned is our Honda. I love it. 2004 and over 105,000 miles. Looks in good condition. Comfortable front and middle seating. Back seat being a bench seat isn't as comfortable. But the car has been so reliable. I will replace with another Honda some day.

I know this has been haggled here in and out many times in the past. Coming back to ask for your opinions/advice as to what to do....here's my situation:

Bought a brand new car back in July 2006. Loved it, but from day 1 had nothing but problems. Filed lemon law suit against GM and settled right before they filed bankruptcy a few years back. I got approx $2K from the settlement, not even close to what I wanted but on the advice from my attorney, took what they were offering at the time as we knew bankruptcy was looming for GM & I would have gotten nothing. Glad I did it, as if I had waited I would have got nothing. Fast forward to today... not *many* problems since the settlement, thank goodness. Brakes have been replaced once, rotors turned 3x already and needing done again... need new tires at this point. The rotor thing has got me, why do they need turned so much? I'm not hard on them or anything, I think it's just junk material on the car. Anyway....

Wanting something a little bigger with more room for the kids (we have 2 kids) so a van is not a necessity but would be nice. I drove an Odyssey last week but still looking at T & C also. Have not driven one yet. I know Honda's last for ever and ever... but we currently have a Dodge (car) and it has over 200K miles on it, and have a friend also with a Dodge with 300K+ miles on it. So this tells me that Chrysler products last as long as Honda, at least this is my opinion, wanting to know what your opinion was on these two choices?

Also I still owe $7500 approx on my car, and they are only wanting to give $6500 for trade. Given the work that needs put into it right now as it sits ($500 for tires, $200 approx for brakes) would I really be in that bad of shape to trade at this point?

Ah....decisions. I just want something that's gonna last, as this car should, but it's not! And if we make any road trips or anything, something where the kids are not sitting on top of each other and picking on each other, as they are now. I was also considering an Acadia, but again, a GM product, and not really wanting to go down that road again. ALSO not wanting a $500 per month car payment! ;)

Yes the Honda 3rd row does fold completely flat!

I had an Odyssey and was very happy with it, but I decided I was not a minivan kind of person. We kept ours for just over 1 year. It was really nice, rode very smoothly. I would stay away from T&C but that's just me. I'm not a fan. My mom had one years ago and it lost it's tranny, same with a family friend. They also had a Grand Cherokee and that lost its tranny at just over $100k.

I have an '05 Dodge Grand Caravan with stow n go, and I really really really like it. Always have. I guess we got lucky because we have never any problems with ours. Same for our PT Cruiser that we got rid of to get the van. :confused3

Someone backed into our side door and it had to go into the shop for a week or two. The rental was an '08 Grand Caravan which has been redesigned from our year model. I hated that thing! Ugh! It was smaller and just not as comfortable. I didn't like the way it drove either.

Now! Having said all that, my best friend drives an '08 or '09 Odyssey and I love that car! *sigh* I covet it. Really, I didn't know what I was missing out on until I drove hers one day. Big Big BIG mistake.

I'm totally happy with my Grand Caravan but my next one will be an Odyssey. ETA: Unless Volkswagen does a new retro Mini Bus (like they did with the Beetle back in the 90's.) I'd be all over that!

Statistically, you're going to get a more reliable car with a Honda. If you have had good luck w/Chrysler in the past, that may just be good luck. Ford is the most reliable domestic brand. IMO Chrysler offers a lot more glitz and skin-deep things and Honda doesn't feel as nice, but will stick with you longer. Good luck with your new van, enjoy the new car smell!:rotfl::rotfl:

I recommend checking out the Consumer Reports issue about cars (March or April, I'm not sure which) and also the reviews on edmunds.com. Those are both well respected when it comes to giving impartial car reviews and ratings. Based on those two resources (and my previous experiences with Dodge and Chrysler minivans), I personally would not consider the T&C. It got bad reviews this year (CR called it a disappointment) but the Odyssey was much more highly rated and got great reviews. I don't have either - I have a Sienna, but when it's time to replace it I will almost certainly get either another Sienna or an Odyssey depending on which one is more highly rated that year.

I second this advice. Chrysler and Dodge do not get good ratings compared to Honda or Toyota.

I have oned every minivan made including multiple Odysseys & Chrysler product. Chrysler wins hands down. The van rides better, the price is better, & service is soo much btter at Chrysler. Google Honda + Transmission problems. People will ALWAYS defend Honda even when they make sub par vehicles. Just like people are defending Toyota.

ITA. We've owned just about every van under the sun too and the Town & Country is by far the best. We've had two. Never ever a single problem. Great road trip van and perfect for 4 kids, sometimes more!

Volkswagen must agree too because their new Routan van is exactly like the Town & Country, and made by Chrysler.

I have never owned nor driven a T&C so can't comment. . .
I do have a 9 yo Odyssey - which teen DS has been driving for the last 4 years - and I LOVED it for the 5 years I drove it!! Never a single problem. I moved on to a Honda CRV when DS got his license and took over the Odyssey and LOVE it too!!:thumbsup2

Thanks so much for all the replies. We're still haggling this out. I will def check out Consumer Reports (mag) and Edmunds.com. Thanks for that suggestion!

I don't think I will buy another GM product as long as I live given the issues I've had with the vehicle I have right now. That is for sure!!

The T & C is very decked out, like someone above mentioned, the skin deep things. I do want something reliable and that will last, not be in the shop all the time. Alot to consider. I wish someone would decide for me and then go and negotiate with the dealer to get me a good deal!! :rotfl: All of this process makes my stomach in knots.

Just remember CR & Edmunds are very skewed towards Japanese cars. I urge you to google the Honda Transmission issues and also visit Odyclub.com. On Odyclub you will have to wade through the "I think Honda is the best thing since sliced bread" post but you wil find many problems with them as well there was just one the other day about a brand new ody needing a new motor block MAJOR issue. All minivans seem to be prone to issues you just have to decide which one suits you best and buy an extended warranty. I will say the comfort & drive in the T&C is far superior than the Ody unless you enjoy road vibration in the steering wheel & road noise.

We currently have a 2005 T & C, and it has been a pretty good vehicle. We are hard on our vehicles...push maintenance out as long as we can and put a LOT of miles on each year. It currently has over 130,000 miles on it (we did buy it used). I feel like we are constantly doing something with the brakes, and the rotors need to be turned quite often. It may just be my imagination, or simply we drive a lot!

There are a few little "glitches" that we found in ours...the sliding passenger doors have broken (the wires held in the casing at the bottom were exposed) and the automatic locks stopped working for a while. These two things are outside the normal wear and tear, and were annoying until my husband rigged something up to fix them. Upon researching each of the issues, we found others who have had the same experience and found solutions to them. Just an annoyance.

I will admit the vehicle is not my favorite, but for no reason in particular. I did not want a minivan, but caved to my husband even though it is my vehicle. I would much rather prefer and SUV. It does get the job done, though! :drive:

::yes:: Bolded by me - my thoughts EXACTLY! I hate minivans but because of our family size and the price we got a brand new Chrysler T&C this past August. The kids love all of the gadgets - double DVD screens, satellite radio and power everything. The power liftgate came in very handy after my shoulder surgery. We have had it back in the shop already for issues with the sliding passenger door (an issue someone else we know with a T&C had as well). The carpeting on the floorboard in the passenger seat will not stay tucked in under the plastic panel so we have to have the dealership "fix" it every time we take it in for something else. DH's key fob is dead already and he hardly drives the car. I find the front seats horribly uncomfortable (I miss my plush leather seats in our old Yukon XL that you would sink into) and I swear the "leather" in the T&C is some sort of vinyl instead. The stow n go feature is nice when we want to haul stuff around and those are quick and easy (even the older kids can do this themselves).

For the money I guess it is a good choice if you need something affordable to haul around a bunch of people (we have 5 kids) but I miss the comfort of my big SUV like crazy.

We have owned an Odyssey for almost 9 yrs. now and we have had no major problems with it. It has 70k+ mi. on it now and we have had to replace the brakes one time. No other major issues. It has held up well against 3 kids, 2 adults and 2 dogs as well as daily commutes/carpools- not to mention soon to be 3 trips to WDW. :goodvibes We are looking at a new vehicle in the next year or so and the Odyssey is at the top if the list.

We previously owned a Chrysler product (Grand Caravan) and had nothing but trouble with it: Electronic issues, transmission, change of brakes (3x in the four years we had it- not do to driver abuse) and air conditioning. We will never own another Chrysler product again.

Good luck on your search!

You know, the Odyssey I did drive was quite noisy, especially the brakes. That was one thing I did notice and didn't like. I thought maybe it was that particular one I drove because it was one that had the recall on the "air in the brakeline" deal and hadn't been repaired yet. I really wasn't that impressed with it, maybe it's because I really am not that excited about a van! ;) But I will check out everything mentioned here, as well as drive a T & C and see how I like it. I do appreciate everyone's input so far! And you are right, every type of vehicle and manufacturer can have issues and I suppose it's just luck of the draw. That's how I feel about my current car, since, like I said, we have 3 in the family and mine's the only one with issues. :sad2:

Just remember CR & Edmunds are very skewed towards Japanese cars.

It's true that Japanese cars do tend to be rated higher than American cars most of the time. However, some American cars have also been highly rated by CR and edmunds. I don't think that's because of a bias; I think it's simply because American cars haven't performed as well in the various tests. Cars don't receive good reviews simply because they are Japanese (or Korean, or German, etc) or bad reviews simply because they are American. The good thing about CR and edmunds is that they are very specific with their reviews (they point out which vehicles have more road noise, for example, but they also consider things like maintanance costs the owners can expect to pay or reliability and resale value), and they really are fairly impartial. They don't just assign each car a ranking without explaining why, they evaluate them based on many different criteria and they explore the pros and cons of each one. A reader might decide that they prefer a car that wasn't the highest rated overall because it was highly rated in the areas that are particularly important to them. I don't think anyone should decide what car to purchase simply by choosing the car that edmunds or CR says is best, but those are still great resources when trying to decide what car is the best buy for your money.

I've owned three Plymouth and Chrysler vans, but never ever ever again. I finally bit the bullet and bought an Odyssey. You pay more up front, but the Chrylser vans are worthless when you're done with them. The Hondas hold their value very well.

My T&C turned over 168,000 miles yesterday on my way home. The only thing EVER done to this van is the a/c. Now that wasn't exactly cheap but it still runs great. It still looks great. People who get in my van can't believe that it is 8 1/2 years old (bought in Dec 2001). It does now have a slight oil leak but it is a SLIGHT leak and not an actual problem. I haven't had issues with the brakes. I haven't had transmission issues (knock on wood). It's been a GREAT van. I love driving it and I'm not sure that I would want to go back to a car again now that I'm used to driving my van.

That is exactly how I feel. Nothing beats the comfort of a Chrysler van. Of course I love firm leather seats and someone who likes plush might feel different. I don't think I'll ever drive a car again.

Love my 2005 Ody!!

I checked out all the websites including Edmunds and OdyClub before I purchased our Ody brand new back in 2005.

It is an EX-L with Navi/DVD/power doors. The only thing not offered was the power rear hatch because I wanted the 8 passenger ability and at the time you could not get both.

The only issue I've had in 5 years of ownership is the rear hatch hydraulics failed ($200 covered under warranty) and normal wear and tear replacements of brakes, tires, battery and oil. I only use Mobil 1 and only twice a year max.

Drove to WDW every year in it since 2005. Great gas mileage. I fill up once a week for work.

Also have a Toyota Sienna 2001 and it still rides like a Lexus:goodvibes

Never owned a Chrysler so no help there.

I could have written this post. My 2001 Chrysler minivan has 130,000 miles on it, and we haven't ever done anything but routine maintenance to it. I just noticed the other day that the a/c isn't as cold as it was last year, so that may be the first "repair" it's ever needed.

We've had such great luck with our Chrysler that we went out and bought a Dodge Journey a couple months ago. Hoping for great luck with that one, too!

We have a 2003 Honda Odyssey and the only problem we have had was a dead battery when, me, the DW, left a light on in the van all night. DH was not a happy camper with me :sad2:

We love our Honda Odyssey. We take it on family trips and I am mostly a DW who drives the kids around. Only 63,000 miles on my 2003 Honda Odyssey.

Actually we have been a Honda driver family for the last 10 years.
My DH made his last 1999 Honda Civic go to 160,00 miles before we traded it in for his new 2009 Honda Civic.
