Homeschoolers: Ways to "socialize" your kids

Too much religion during math?

Sounds like a teacher issue rather than a curriculum issue.

OP- We really like the Chalk Dust math program, if you start feeling paranoid... Have had 3 kids enter into college without remedial help  using Math u see, Abeka, Chalk dust and/or Saxon. Didn't use the DVDs, though with the Abeka program.

The thing about math is that everyone seems to have their own best way to learn it! Am hoping the rest of the kids can get thru using one of these programs! :rolleyes1

I think this is a great thread. Our DS is only 19 mos, but last night we watched Prime Time. Did anyone watch? They separated girls (13-17yrs) in groups and let them interact thru internet and cell phones and the results were shocking. The sexual talk and bullying was amazing. They even interviewed a father that lost his son due to bullying at school. DH and I deceided we are going to homeschool. It freaked us out. But I am worried about socialization but just not too much socialization. :sad2:

Hey... Not sure if I am the sort of source you're looking for, but anyway:
I am a homeschooler. That is, I am the student.
As for socialization, I do not participate in many different activities, but I am quite fine and content with those I do participate in:
Once a week, I take art classes - I am in an adult class (though there is a couple others around my age).
Every-other week I take horseback riding lessons - I pay for them myself, and therefore cannot afford to go more often.
Church on Sundays - my class is somewhat small - there's about 4-6 girls there on average, but the fellowship is nice.

Then again, I have six siblings around to interact with at any given moment.

I primarily use Bob Lones curriculum, and I have yet to find any major faults with it. Currently, I am using: Bob Jones math (Consumer Math), bible studies, literature, and world history. The Bob Jones English textbooks are pretty good, and I actually quite enjoyed the vocabulary work/text-books.

Most cities, even smaller ones have a parks and recreation system that host all manner of sports teams. That is an option for those opportunties. There are chess clubs, reading clubs, bowling leagues, zoo docents etc. You've already mentioned church and youth group. Have you checked into your area homeschool support group or co-op, those also provide opportunities for ''socialization''

I have not personally used ABeka, our philosophy of learning is different than theirs. However I have a dear friend that uses them and loves them. They are heavy on bookwork/busy work. They do tend to be ''advanced'' as compared to the same grade level in a public school setting.
