*** Homeschool List ***

We are a happy homeschooling family and we live in Lanett, AL. Our covering is in Auburn. Feel free to PM me with any questions.

Where did everyone go??

I had lost this thread for a while, but now I am working on trying to prepare to start HSing next year(if at all possible). I have so many more questions I don't even know where to begin. I am overwhelemed by figuring out a ciriculum. But right now, my biggest ? is, how do you figure out which cover(umbrella?) to join under?? There are so many in my area, and we are very rural. I was amazed at how many there were.

Also, tis may seem an odd question, but what are the main differences in christian and non-christion groups. I think I get the main difference, but what is taught differently other than bible study??

I am sure I will have more questions later. Thanks for any replies.

Alisha

We are in the Montgomery area. Our cover is based out of Montgomery. If you have not tried it yet, Elmore County Homeschool organization has a website that has several links and great resources. Even if you are not in or near Elmore County, they have an awesome group that welcomes everyone and very helpful people. It can be found at onlineECHO.com.

It really depends. I'm not familiar with the umbrella schools in Ala, so I'm just speaking in general about the differences in curriculum.
As for Xtian suppliers
Some are very fundemental Xtain... ie new earth creationalism is taught in science. Other offer Bilbe study, but all other subjects are secular. then you have several variations that fall between the 2. some use the bible in all their all their subjects. IE hand writing would be a bible quote, grammar would include naming parts of speach in a bible quote etc, music would include Xtain songs etc.

I've found in looking at curriculum and in looking into support groups that the differences between Christian viewpoints and secular viewpoints can crop up in any and all areas.

If you are a Christian and you are sometimes bothered by the viewpoint presented in public school curriculum or even in television programming you will find the same possibilities in secular and some religious materials and groups. If you are not a Christian and you are sometimes bothered by the viewpoint presented in say a Christian private school curriculum you've seen or some religious television programming then you are likely to see the same possibilities crop up in your homeschooling choices. I've found that in our family we do very well in choosing materials that present viewpoints that we are comfortable with or are close to agreeing with and then we are able to use any differences as topics for discussion and learning.

I use a curriculum fair (at our state homeschool convention) to expose myself to many curriculums and make choices between them. If you plan on attending a curriculum fair, bring it up here! I'm sure you'll get some good advice on how to handle it. They can be terribly overwhelming your first year or two.

I'd like to be on the list. We homeschool our 7 year old now and our 5 year ols will start next year. I'd love to chat with fellow DIS homeschoolers

I would love to go to the state HS convention, but cash is really short right now. I think I would be so overwhelmed with all the choices right in front of me.

Once again, I would like to encourage ALL of you to send a PM to the mods of this board to ask for a subforum for homeschooling. It would be so much easier to discuss all the different topics that way than on one thread. There is another active thread right now too so be sure to check it out on this board too. It is simple called "homeschooling"

Welcome welcome to all the new faces!!!

We are in a really rural area, kinda close to Anniston and Gadsden.

I have found that a couple of covers require bible study. I do not want that. A christian slant would be fine, but I do not need someone telling me that I have to do that.

Also, these state HS conventions, how do you find out about them?? Do you have to have a cover in place to attend them?

I am a single mother of DD8(almost 9) and DS 5. I have limited funds for this. But, I send money in to the school all through the year, so that would be money going toward HS supplies. Any tips you can give for staying with a tight budget will be greatly appreciated.

I am so glad that this thread is here. Thank you all.

I have PMed away (again, I did it "way back") and this time I took it one step further and emailed also (I finally found the contact info I was looking for somewhere totally unrelated...figures ;) ).

Please do PM the moderator! How nice would it be to have separate threads for separate discussions and at least the chance that those who are "anti" homeschooling would not even feel the need to click and "discuss" as we would not be posting on the main families forum. And even if they did feel the need...they could click and start their own thread...thus not pulling others threads way off topic!

I hate having to debate the same issues over and over and over again. It would also be of great benefit to all of us if we had a place where multiple threads would allow us the benefit of being able to go back and find helpful information a few days, weeks or even months later due to the fact that we could skim thread topics vs. having to dig through over a thousand posts on this thread or hundreds of posts on some others. Also, to find homeschooling threads that are more then just debate is like finding a needle in a hay stack here. Heck, just finding them at all is a real challenge due to the sheer volume of what comes across this board (which is good...I like variety...just hate it when I am looking for one thing I really would love to find and it lies hidden in the mix).

Okay...I am dreaming...:cloud9: But hopefully, if some of you share my dreams...you just might take the time to PM the moderator and hopefully someday something will come of our repeated requests! You won't get something you don't ask for! ;)

Have a great day!!

We are on a tight budget too. Check out scholastic.com they have weekly mini newspapers for about $10 for the year. They come with worksheets and posters and online activities. I also google what we are talking about and am able to find lots of free stuff on the internet

Denine, fwiw, the Cinn. conference isn't very expensive. We pricelined a 2 1/2 star hotel for $30 a night, that is near there. And it is nice to look, even if you have a set spending amt. Then you can go home and ask around, or check ebay...or check here!

I just found out my gf has Rosetta French, which we are borrowing next year!

I talked to several covers yesterday, and I just talked to 1 today. I think I have found the one I want to use. The lady was soo nice and everything just seemed to fit. I still want to go to a meeting with them. But it just felt right. I feel so much better about everything after talking to her.:goodvibes

You may be able to find this book at the library. I've looked at it and it seems to have plenty of good ideas for low/no cost options.

popcorn:: I just found this thread and I love it! DS is a little to young (2yrs) but I'm really thinking about HS. I'm not to keen on the public schools around me (although the ones across the river are great:sad2: ). A realtive asked me if I would consider private school. At 16k a year I can do just as good of a job or better. And not to knock my relative but she spent 16k a yr x 3 and her kids didn't even know where the Sistine Chapel was. I also live an hr from NYC to I have a great resource there.

I should also mention that my relative is a teacher at a public school but still sent her children to a private school.

Welcome Nemomom. We can't afford private school either and I also don't care for the PS DD would go to.

The last time I looked into the laws regarding HS in Alabama Bible was pretty much be a requirement. The laws(if I remember correctly) do not directly address the issue of HS. They do address "church schooling" and that is what we were told HS in Alabama basically is. We are able to teach our children from our home as long as it is concidered an arm of the church. Technically our kids are enrolled in the cover school. We are just the teachers and home is the classroom. If truant officers come to our home we are instructed to give them a business card from our cover school and simply say they are enrolled there - contact them. Then shut the door immediately. We had to sign a form stating our home was an extension of the church. When we were discussing the legality of HS our kids, we were told the same thing by each cover school we interviewed. I dont know if the laws have changed since we started HS a few years ago. They may be different now. You may not have to teach bible anymore, I just know everyone we found required it.
Going to Sunday school class and church on Wednesday nights count as a Bible lesson.
Again, I am no expert on the Alabama laws, I am just telling you what we were told several years ago. I would suggest you ask someone at one of the covers you have spoken to how the laws read today. Good Luck!!!
