*** Homeschool List ***

I see there are a lot of posts on this thread, I hope it's OK to be adding to it now. I'm a new member here at DIS and I homeschool one of my children (the other one is in public school). It's a long story as to why I have chosed this dual route for my children's education, but the short of the long is that my 2 kids have 2 very different learning styles and my son, the one I homeschool, is thriving at home, while my daughter, in public school, is thriving there! We're really pleased at how well they're both doing. Someday, if my daughter ever needs/or wants to be HS'ed, I'll jump at it! I'd love to teach her at home, but for now, she wants school and that's fine.

Anyways, I'd like to add a link to the previous poster's list...it's for the younger kids but it's so much fun!

www.starfall.com

They have some CUTE things to do there! The site is really big so it takes a lot of time to really look at the whole thing, but there's so many activities and printouts.

I'm glad I found this here! It's nice to have fellow HS'ers to talk to. I'm trying to write a mini-unit of EPCOT right now, so that when we go in June I have several pages ready for my son. I was thinking about a simple one on the various countries in WS, and then one on ecology, the human body (very simple), and one on agriculture (all for FW).

Oh, and thanks for the links above, I really appreciate them!

subscribing to this thread...........a homeschooling board on the DISboards would be soooo nice to have.

Do we need to contact someone for this? Anything we can do to bring this to life?

We have tried, even contacting the moderators but to no avail.:sad1:

For a daily grammar lesson sent to your email address( for older kids or moms;) ) www.dailygrammar.com

I forgot about Starfall. It's been a few yrs since we used it.
Great program.
They used to send the workbooks for free, but I believe now you can just print them out from the website.

subscribing. Due to my younger daughter (7 years old) not thriving in the traditional classroom setting, we are going to be trying cyber schooling for awhile. My older children (DD 13 yo and DS 12 yo) are thriving in their private school and taking them out is not even being considered. We have been going through a nightmare with the school district regarding my 7 year old, so at this point I think it is best to keep her home and see what we can get her to do. Just in the past few weeks with me going back to basics with her I have seen such a difference.

Also if you wouldn't mind posting some of your educational ideas...

One of the posts links to a great website Disney runs that has educational material and links.

I have been following your thread. I am enjoying it. I am homeschool DD8 and DS6 and will eventually do DD4 and DD1.

I have an off-subject question...can someone tell me what it means when people say "bump" or "bumping"?

Thanks.

You "bump" a thread by posting so it moves back to near the top of the board. This thread occassionally gets buried a few pages back, so someone may decide to "bump" it to keep it current. Welcome to the thread! :goodvibes

I don't know why I didn't look for a group of Disney-loving HSers earlier....

Subbing to the thread.

HS mom to DS11, DS8, DD 7. Eldest son did traditional school for a couple years, other two have only known homeschooling. It is their "normal" ;) Already getting curriculum for next school year figured out - always my biggest challenge :scared1: as I like to teach certain subjects with them as a group - that is getting increasingly more difficult.

We actually live in an area where hs-ing is quite common (at least relative to what it is like elsewhere). We even have a HomeSchool Building where kids can take classes in a more traditional setting as desired.

I don't believe I have other online suggestions. I use enchantedlearning.com occasionally - my eldest is outgrowing it a bit. We do tend to use online dictionaries when we're in a pinch.

Here's a few I use.
www.mathworksheetsite.com
and
edhelper.com has LOTS of stuff for all ages.
I also homeschool my 9yearold son and my 12 yodaughter goes to school.
both are soooo different and need different things....allowing them the choice is what it's all about
Denise:thumbsup2 :hippie:

Bumping, don't want us to get too buried!

How many of you school through the year? I am amazed at what my kids, especially my 5yo forget when we take more than a week or so off. The thought of what they would forget over a long summer break is more than I can take, so we'll school through the summer. We will take plenty of breaks though, love that homeschooling flexibility!:goodvibes

I have tried both, year round and summers off, I prefer summers off, but we do educational activites all summer long and join the library's summer reading program(Reading/Literature) and I have the kids participate in as many programs as we can that are offered through our library. We also make cards, letters and greetings to friends and family(good writing practice) they play baseball, swim, and ride bikes, scooters ect..(P.E.) This is also a great time to explore fun but educational websites and computer games(Math, History, Geography, Spelling ect.) This has given me something to look forward to and surprisingly, they learn just as much during summer as they do the rest of the year...they just don't realize it...because it's not "school".

OT: TNKBELL--you had a baby!!!!! Congratulations!!!

And on topic--we will be "schooling" through summer this year. Mainly b/c I was very very sick when we began the year and then took a 3 week delay...and then b/c I took our year down to basics. We have kicked it into high gear though! In fact off to do a project with clay. :scared1:

B/c of our many breaks--I am actually suprised at what my 6yo does retain. But we do a co-op that we did not interrupt and she likes doing those summer bridge work books on her own.

We usually take the months of July and Dec off, then an occasional day here and there. At one time I tried 6 weeks on, 2 off but it really didn't work well for us.

Starting to homeschool next year. Part time. DD will go to school 2 days a week and we will homeschool language arts and math. Kindergarten

We are going to Disney next week and the beach too. Have any educational ideas I could teach my almost 4 and 6 yr old about the beach?
