*** Homeschool List ***

Has anyone read this book...
"Home Learning Year by Year : How to Design a Homeschool Curriculum from Preschool Through High School" by Rebecca Rupp"?

I was wondering if it is an honest listing of what a TYPICAL ps kid is learning in each grade in school. In particular, I don't like lists that say that a child has learned something just because they were exposed to it once on a workbook page.

Okay I need to vent.
I was looking at the boards trying to decide which one to visit first and Instead of finding a homeschool thread I found a gay and lesbian thread. UGH.
When will we get ours. I have questions regarding curriculums and books to read about homeschooling. Maybe I will psot all my questions individually so that maybe we will get our own board.

I totally agree. I don't post too many questions on this board just because it is getting so hard to wade through!

I agree. I think there is enough interest/participants on this thread to dedicate a board to homeschooling. It would be very nice to not have to sort through topics/responses in order to find specific information. I don't have a lot of time to read through everything in order to find what pertains to my family and I.

It's been a long time. I hope the powers that be are watching this thread and seriously considering creating a homeschooling board. I know I would visit and participate often.

Here's hoping! :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:

:wizard: I hereby dub this one of the longest running threads in dis history!!! I haven't been around much lately, we have been busy moving (again) and now we are trying to catch-up with school stuff.....Also went to WDW for Christmas at Wilderness Lodge Villas....AWESOME!!!!! WE NEED OUR OWN FORUM......please :worship:

Have we been officially told no? I think it would be very beneficial to have our own board.

I think there would actually be even more posts if we had our own board. There's lots of discussions that many of us feel like we don't want to post here because it is just too difficult to carry on multiple discussions on one board.

Please give us our own board!!! :flower3: ::yes::

There is just so much to know about homeschooling:

Curriculums
Schedules
Projects
References
Experiences
Advice
Legal Matters
Field Trips
Recommendations on finding local groups, co-ops, tutors

And the list goes on and on! It's hard to find what you want to know by sifting through all these posts! It's not an efficient or effective use of my time to read it alllllll.

So here is some more pixie dust and high hopes for our own board. :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:

Has anyone used the American Girls unit study curriculum by UnitsUnique.com? Or has anyone done anything with the American Girls books in their curriculum? I am thinking of ordering it and fitting it in here and there with our Sonlight curriculum (for my almost 8 year old dd). She is really into the books right now and I'd like to capitalize on her interest.

It would also be great to have one area to go to and learn about and share all the great learning opportunities available at WDW. Especially being able to get together for meets and putting together the "school field trips".

I really thought that the "ugh" comment was unnecessary, inappropriate and offensive. If you are not interested in reading the gay and lesbian posts, just don't go to that board.

I think it is a great idea to have a homeschooling board, but I don't think it is necessary to make comments like that in order to get it. (By the way, some gays and lesbians homeschool too.)

Just a note about the teacher's guides that go with the series. I have not used them in our homeschool, yet. But I did track them down through eBay, etc. They were somewhat difficult to obtain. I browsed the website you posted and it mentions finding the guides through a large retail bookseller. At the time, I was hunting, I could not get them through a bookstore...maybe things have changed since then or they have been re-released. I also recall the guides going for rather high prices when they did go up for auction on eBay.

Don't mean to rain on your parade...just wanted you to know I had a tough time tracking them down a few years ago.

That's OK, I appreciate the info!

bear74- I think you should be able to state an opinion on this board without being told that your opinion is "unnecessary, inappropriate and offensive".

I think Teresa made a valid point.

Homeschoolers come in many shapes, faiths, and sizes. We are not all cut from one mold and that is what makes it wonderful.

We all want our own board and to post in a derogatory manner about another board when petitioning for our own...doesn't make us look to good in our petitions. The opinions may or may not be valid--but they can be construed as offensive and that is not something that those in charge on the DIS take lightly (The creator of the boards if I'm not mistaken--could very well be offended by the comment. Not wise to rock the boat and upset the captain when we're asking for our own deck).

Posting about the need and desire for our own board is in appearance a petition. If we wish the Mods and WMs to take us seriously in our requests, it might be a good idea to keep our requests positive and leave out our personal opinions on what are valid boards and what are not. KWIM?

(not meant as a blast against bear74 or a blast against you in any way).

Maybe people are taking bear74's comments out of context. Maybe he/she just meant there is yet another board that has been added before the homeschooling board. Maybe that's all it was.

I use the word "ugh" out of frustration quite a bit. I could see where he/she could've been just frustrated at the situation of not getting a board. :confused3

I'm giving him/her the benefit of the doubt.

ETA- I just re-read it. Maybe not. I don't know.

Regardless of context--and I'm not meaning to call out anybody...I'm just saying we should watch our frustrations in talking about seeking our own board.

The reason we need our own board is because we have many many things to discuss.

On the WISH board, we just kept posting our individual threads for races and finally, they saw that we needed our own board so that we would have all the information together. Hence the events/competition sub-board of the WISH came to be.

It might be a good idea that if we have pressing homeschool topics--that we start creating new threads. Since we are confining our discussions to this sole thread--it doesn't appear that there is need for a new board as we are keeping ourselves in one place and not clogging up the regular boards.

Make sense?

This thread could be 10,000 posts long and it will not certify that a separate board is needed--in fact, the more posts it gets kind of has the opposite affect.

LLP, I understand your point. There are posters that are calling bear74 out on her comments and that is why I responded.

The last thing I have to say on the matter is I agreed because I mentally inserted photography board instead of the other. While I like photography it came ahead of our request. And it was a let down. And I could relate. That's all I was saying.

It has been hard to find information on specifics to homeschooling. I agree this is one of the reason why. That's all from me.

P.S.- I agree with starting threads that are more specific. That's a great idea! :) :flower:
