*** Homeschool List ***

I posted all the "hellos" and "Thank you's" in the languages of the 11 EPCOT countries on my pre-trip report-check it out!!! Link below...

Thank you for your input homeschool board!!

Lori

We are going to focus on China as our foreign country as we will be in WDW during Chinese New Year...I'm planning on general books but does anyone have any fiction based on China ??

We're reading The Liberty Tree right now because we're doing Am. History this year but also because of Liberty Tree Tavern which the kids love in MK ;)

What age? Are you looking for a chapter book? I'm pretty sure Magic Tree House has a book set in China.

This one looks good: Runaway Rice Cake
by Ying Chang Compestine and you could do a compare/contast with The Gingerbread Man.

The Miss Frizzle in Ancient China one is quite good. Good amount of fun and info blended together. There is also one about a boy and his magic paintbox though I can't remember the name. If you like I could look up the reading list for China in my Story of the World book.

How old are your kids and are you looking for chapter or picture book suggestions?

Fa Mulan is an actual book that Disney used to create the cartoon. You can get Fa Mulan at the library and it would be a good comaparsin to the Disney version before you go~!

For China, we did Mulan, went to the library and got a few children's books. Our favorite was about all the things invented in China. And then we went to out to "sample" their food!

I was just thinking that we have a cassette story tape that has Chinese Fairy Tales on it that is really cool. That is the title of it and there really isn't an author since they are a bunch of traditional stories.

We read some stories off of the internet today, made lanterns, zodiac calendars, how to say our name in Chinese, what 'year' we were born in, colored a dragon in the colors specified on some sights(reds/golds/purples), made pork/lo mein/egg rolls for dinner with fortune cookies for dessert. I put a couple photos of it on our pre=trippy(link below)..
here are the links we used...

Two of Everything was funny!!

my kids are older than preschool (8 and 10) but LOVED this one. WE used pretty scrap booking paper and put a light under it. Pictures of this on pre-trip.

I didn't get as much off of this as I though we could but it was a GREAT resource. A Disney unit study!!...

Hey Lori!

We're Auburn fans, so we were happy that LSU won! Go Tigers!

Here's something for you Jane Austen fans (like my DD) -

PBS is beginning a tribute to Jane Austen on Masterpiece Theater. The list of movies are...

Persuasion - January 13 (new series)
Northanger Abbey - January 20 (new series)
Mansfield Park - January 27 (new series)
Miss Austen Regrets - February 3 (repeat series??)
Pride and Prejudice - February 10, 17, and 24 (a repeat...with Colin Firth)
Emma - March 23 (repeat...with Kate Beckinsale)
Sense and Sensibility - March 30 and April 6 (new series)

This is for Alabama, so your state may have a different schedule.

I'm here. I always read the new posts, just don't usually respond unless I have something to say:laughing: As we don't use a lot of cirriculum , lately I don't have much to discuss;) We are totally unschoolers here:rotfl:

Lori, I see your Disney trip is coming up fast:banana:

We are leaving the day after tomorrow!!!:cool1:

I'm here, I've just been out trying to enjoy the warm weather here in PA before it goes away and leaves us snow again.

We're here too, just trying to get back into the swing of a schedule. Thinking that a year ago I was packing for Disney. Sigh...:sad1: At least I have a trip in October to start thinking about!:cool1:

I'm here too. But hey, when you check how many posts everyone has on this thread I have WAY more than anyone else so I figured I should shut up for awhile!!

We are going along okay. No word yet on if DD was accepted to the gifted program we applied for for next year. If she doesn't get in I have decided to do the virtual public school. It bugs me a little but I really want someone else keeping track of her studies etc and I can't afford to buy a program like that on my own.

Kids started gymnastics today. That means mommy gets 2 hours alone and I only have to pay $15 for it!! Best time of the winter I tell ya! And they come out worn out, sweaty and excercised after everyone having done a good job of school in the morning because no one wants to miss gymnastics.

Just getting in last minute things here. Trying to load up the car tomorrow so we can get up early and hit the road for Disney Friday around 7am!

Wow, that's a lot of stuff!
It sure will feel good when you are done and on the road relaxing on vacation:laughing:
Good luck getting away from the computer...the closer it gets, the harder it is!!!

*I found out you can charge the parking at the parks! Thought you might want to know;)

Also, what days are you doing what parks again? Are you going to the Homeschool Days Mon. and Tues.?

You should glance at the first page of my pre trip report (the link is below)there are pics of us on the first post...that way you can say hi at Epcot if you see us. We will be going to the speaker series both days:thumbsup2

I'm here too!! I always read the posts, I have found so much info for hs on these threads and I am sooo thankful for all of you!!:grouphug:

Julie, I am thinking about the virtual school route myself, some of my hs buddies in our hs group have basically said that they think that it is the government's way of trying to control hs? I see it as a $ saver for our family and also some accountibility for me. What are your thoughts?

Dawn, I hope you have a great trip!!! :cheer2: I can't wait to hear about it when you get back!!! Thank you for the tips you posted about it and skyauction deals!!!:woohoo:

You can do this at guest relations now. I haven't even ordered my Reward card yet. I have called and asked and searched for a thread to validate this and it is true! Just letting you know so if you forget or whatnot, you can do it at the Downtown Disney. Right now I am getting my Reward card there, then buying the DDE with what I have on the Reward card, then picking up our pre-paid Pirate and Princess party tickets there too! I'm gonna keep them busy on Feb 1st!!

Have a blast!!!!

Hey, Homeschoolers!!! .........

Where are you??!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Teaching or something??:rotfl:

I'm not a homeschooler yet, but my DH and I are seriously considering it for our two younger children (DD8 & DS6) next year so I just wanted to say hi! :wave2:
I have been very intrigued by the Disney homeschool days and find it very exciting. I'm looking forward to hearing all about it. Wishing everyone a great time!!

Well, I kind of agree with your friends in your group honestly. It is not homeschooling in the true sense of the word and I don't like the idea of it for younger grades. She will basically be a public school student whose schooling takes place at home. However, for the junior high years, I like the idea of someone else grading her papers. I don't feel my expectations (or for that matter my organizational skills ;) )are high enough. Considering that my first choice is actually sending her to a public school I am not doing much different there. I think that some people who are against the virtual schools are also anti-public schools. I'm really not. I know the typical school system is not a good fit for my family, but I also know that for many people it is def the best choice.

My boys are much more "unschooled" than DD. We do some structure though so we're not truly in that camp. I don't know how one would get math and reading by unschooling and I am pretty structured about those. For me though, I don't feel confident in the college track without some more structured accountable system in place. With the boys I figure as long as they can read, write, know their adding and subtracting(at this point) have some history and science then we are covered. With DD OTOH I want to make sure her language arts are well rounded and that her history and science go deeper than we sometimes do at home.

How is that for a long winded answer? I think what it comes down to is that I have never been certain as some people are that I would homeschool all the way through and that as we get into these older years, I have no desire to homeschool high school. Not much drive to do middle school either actually. So, here we are.
