My DH and I are looking to buy our first house! We've got a real estate agent and a mortage broker. However I'll need home owners insurence. Does anyone have any recomendations? (Our car insurence is currently with progressive and we'd prefer not change that, as we've been quite happy with them)

A lot depends on where you are located. Check out several independent agencies and see who can get you the best rates. Be sure you have correct elevation information information on the property for flood insurance.

Like a Good Neighbor....State Farm is there!!

I route for State Farm.

If you are pleased there, that would be my first go-to. See what plans they have and rates. Then get some referrals from a few people in YOUR area who are pleased with theirs. Remember, bundling your auto and home will generally give you a discount on both.

Shop around. Look for an agent that deals with different companies. They can compare and give you the best rates. Be prepared...rates just went up. Just got my renewal and mine went up a little over $100 for the year. Good luck!!

I agree with Dan. I have my auto, life and homeowners thru Prudential. They give a discount if you have multiple policies with them.

This past month I just got Nationwide for my home and car. Yup...discount for having both with them. Yipee! :Pinkbounc :teeth:

I agree. I priced quite a few companys and State Farm was one of the cheapest. There were a few that were a little cheaper, but I went with State Farm because the have been around a long time and my mom has had to make a couple claims thru them (flood, fence blew down) and they never gave her any problems at all. They were always very fare and they didnt raise her rates because of the claims.

Start getting quotes on your homeowners insurance now so there won't be any surprises when you're ready to close on the house. Be prepared to pay higher rates if the home has had a lot of claims activity. Many insurers use the same database and can now check on the previous claims made against the property. Doesn't seem very fair -- but that's the way it is.

also be sure to ask about other discounts, we get a multi- policy discount and we also get a discount because its paid directly from our checking account monthly. I think there are others, but I can't think off hand, but maybe others can help.
