Homemade laundry tablets

Keep us updated on your tablet experiments.

There is one local grocery store, Shaw's, that still carries the Purex tabs. Last time they were on sale I bought two boxes to stash away. Also, the new Publix in Orlando (near the Lake Buena Vista outlets) had a huge display of them back in May.

If you have a Big Lots near you, you might want to check there. I bought a box of Tide tabs (112 tabs per box) for $9.99.

I am concerned, particularly if the laundromat has a front loader, that the Dawn dish detergent could cause oversudsing. Most laundry detergents limit their sudsing ability. Wouldn't it be easier to put a single load amount of Tide in a double zip lock bag? I found Purex tabs before I went to Hawaii and those packed well. I don't use them when I get home, I just save the left overs for the next trip. They are more expensive than liquids.

That reminds me of a story that my sister told me awhile back. When her daughter was a teenager she went to start the dishwasher. Instead of grabbing the dishwasher detergent she grabbed the liquid dish soap and "filled 'er up". Of course the dishwasher had way too many suds with it overflowing to the kitchen floor. The floor got a great cleaning! :earseek: I'm sure that was quite a sight!

Great thread! I just spent a couple of hours yesterday looking all over the internet (Pooh's pal goes into cyberspace! ) trying to find laundry tablets. But no luck!
I thought these would be easier for my DD to take off to college to do laundry in the dorms, instead of liquid or powder. I kind of gave up looking at my local stores after I had no luck on the internet, and I just went to Walmart & Target on Saturday..but didn't look for them.
My closest Walmart & Target are a good 30-45 minute drive on a good day without traffic. BUT, Thanks Margie J....I've got a Shaw's down the street and I'll go check there on Tuesday and thanks DisneyDoll..maybe I'll check CVS or Brooks too!

Great Idea on making them...but I'd watch the "dawn"!

I like the idea of tablets but I don't remember ever seeing any of these. I'll have to keep an eye out for them. Right now, I just make sure to put away another $2.00 in quarters so that I can buy one of the miniboxes. I figure with all that we spend, what's another $2.00?

I wonder...if you skipped the dawn and baked them on a low heat to dry them out would that work? Or if there was some way you could put pressure on it to pack it together...put a pretty dry paste between two pans and squeeze hard or weigh it down with books or rocks... Sounds like a good subject for an elementary school science project.

I'd probably go with double bagging followed by packing the bags in a rigid container like a metal celestial seasonings/harry & david style box. For myself I use either the tablets or the trial size boxes.

Even if you succeed in making a tablet, without the "compression" mentioned I think they will break apart in transit and end up being the same as double-bagging powder detergent. It's always fun to play but I'm not confident this can be done at home.

If you want to contact Purex and find out where the laundry detergent tabs are sold in your area their # is 1-800-457-8739 and their website is www.purex.com I used to have Wisk tabs, and I have no idea if they are still made.

I add a squirt of dish soap to each load I do now. I learned this trick on the DIS. No problems at all with over sudsing!

I just bought a box of the laundry ablets at Big lots..they were pretty cheap, under 10.00 for a good size box. I am going to save them and only use them for vacations!
