Homemade Holiday Presents! Lets help each other! Ideas WANTED!

It took me 2 days, a loss of sleep, and some speed reading but I read every single post :thumbsup2 I love love love all of the ideas and I have a little notebook with everyone I need to get a gift for and who's getting what. A gift I did when I was younger was buying a kit and putting your hand in plaster and then decorating it for grandma or mom (they usually treasure these things most;) ). I found a link but it doesn't show a price...

I just thought it would be a cute personalized gift to give:goodvibes

I too just spent 2 days reading all the posts on this thread - it has really gotten me in the mood to get going on my Christmas gift projects this year and has given me some great ideas to add to my list! We are going to Disney the first full week of December, and of course with Thanksgiving the week before - my goal is to have any projects I'm working on for Christmas done before Thanksgiving so I can enjoy vacation without worrying that I am not ready for Christmas!

I also have a few ideas to share with everyone...I will try to post those later tonight, when I have a little more time on my hands! :santa:

I've loved this thread!

This year we are making the Mickey tie-dyed shirts for my parents - we're going to WDW with them in the spring.

Also, my kiddos are making carmel/chocolate dipped apples for aunts, grandparents, etc.

For all you daycare/pre-school teachers, "we"(I) will be making altered clipboards for each child's family...fun to make since the kids get to pick out the papers and ribbons for the clipboards and useful too.

I plan to paint the wood in either red or green and use decoupage medium over the paint and paper to be sure it is sealed. I was also thinking of adding a nice daycare poem on the front as well as a "homemade" label on the back with the child's name/year/age.

And it's a lot better than stuff that is going to get looked at once and thrown away when the kids aren't looking. And yes, I have found "holiday" presents tossed in the trash can when I go in the next day after putting them in cubbies.

we are sending 'tea' baskets' with some herbal tea, a jar of scone mix and some homemade preserves.

For dMil, i'm going to print a family photo on clear adhesive paper, affix it to a glass block, embellish it with ribbon and silk poinsetta flowers and stick a light in it.

I need to keep an eye on this thread! :goodvibes

I have 20 Girl Scouts that could use these ideas! :santa:

Well this isn't " home made" as much as its budget. But what I do for tier 2 gift list people (like non family ie teachers, my co-worker ex..) I collect free and cheap items throughout the year and make gift baskets from baskets I buy after Easter on clearance. I get these items from the following
-cvsing
-clearance shelves at target/walgreens/Kmart
-coupon deals like bogo

This started at my solution to being able to grab deals for stuff i can't/ don't want to use. Like free lipstick in hot pink... scary for me.. but nice gift for my uncles girlfriend ( don't ask). Or men's products.

I would say throughout the year I spend around 100 dollar doing that. I end up with about 20 small baskets of stuff people actually want.

gee I hope know one see this that I give the baskets to. :rotfl2:

Well it's been a really long night and I am beyond tired, but I wanted to get back on and post at least one idea I have, which is actually my favorite idea. I have been collecting Starbucks (and also Target brand) Frappuccino bottles and their holders (the bottles with holders come in 4-packs). I plan on turning them into hot chocolate gift sets (with one bottle filled with hot chocolate mix, one with peppermint sticks, one with marshmallows and possibly another hot chocolate or white chocolate mix, or maybe some kind of nice chocolates), and also I am creating one salsa-set with the jars filled with home-made salsa, along with a bag of tortilla chips and a gift card to a local Mexican restaurant (for a friend that absolutely loves that restaurant). I may vary it up even more once I get into the actual deciding of who gets what. They will be decorated using Christmas-themed scrapbooking paper and embellishments.

Here are some pics of one set I made for a friend for her birthday this year. This one was a spa set, but you get the idea. Once I finish some Christmas sets I will post pics of those as well.

The frap sets at Wal-mart and Target run about $5, most of the scrapbooking supplies I already have on-hand, and the fillings will cost very minimally considering I'll be making the mixes in bulk and they will fill several sets. So all in all I think it will be a really cute gift for neighbors, teachers, etc. but without breaking the bank :santa:

Great idea! You did a wonderful job on these!:thumbsup2

Those are so cute! And I was at WalGreens last night and they had them on sale, in case anyone is interested :)

A ? on making bath salts - all of the recipes I see for it include Food Dye. Won't that stain?? I'm confused I guess. I love that spa 4 pack idea!!

What a lovely gift! Good job!

I'm toying with the idea of making a "family cookbook". It won't be a big surprise to anyone since they will have all contributed. It will be similar to what churches and clubs do, but smaller and much more personal. (I'll have to print it myself and get it bound at Kinkos I guess).
I want to include the recipes that my relatives are "famous" for: my aunt's rolls, my mom's chicken and noodles, Grandma's pot roast...that sort of thing. I think many will appreciate it and it will be something treasured as the years pass.
I hope some are willing to give up their "secret ingredients". :goodvibes
I'd also like to get family members to write up a short paragraph of a fun family memory that I could disperse throughout the cookbook. Adding pictures would be awesome, too.
Wow. I better get to work!

I would LOVE to get this for Christmas. It's more work than I think u think. But a treasure to be passed down. U r very thoughtful.

Mom-n-Michaela, what type of paint did you use to paint the lids. I've made these before, but I used paper and ribbon on the lids. I like the paint better.

I made mine Christmas themed and put Christmas socks bought at the dollar tree into each bottle for a teacher friend.

I actually just used the Apple Barrel craft paint, then sealed it with spray acrylic sealant. I was thinking I might try spray paint next time if I can find it in the colors I want, I think that would be easier. I had to coat the lids I think 5 times to get a good coating with the craft paint.

Hope that helps :goodvibes

Do you have any pictures of your Christmas themed ones? I am going to start on mine this weekend and would love to see some inspiration! :)

Thanks for bumping this thread back up.. I really like the candcane vase idea and think I might make a few for the house here as decorations.. and then make one for my sister and sister inlaw and bring them some flowers at Christmas time.. Too cute!!
