homemade christmas gifts/inexpensive

ok some of you have said you don't like homemade stuff, I started this thread since several people I know LOVE that kind of thing & I am out of ideas.

that said.....
the one item I **hate** is the christmas ornaments that my great neices & nephews make with their pictures on it....... arrghhhh.. sorry but I am not putting your kids on my tree! I don't toss them, just pack them in a decoration box..

I don't really mind homemade gifts as long as they are useful. I know, yuk! I'm one of those useful people. Calendars, bath salts, tasty salsa; all good. Home made wooden chotskies (sp?), little weird pot holders made just for the microwave; no thanks.

This is a little off topic, but one year I actually got a pot holder from probably 1972 that actually had cat hair on it at a gift exchange. I didn't quite know what to say. Everyone at the table had this horrified look on there face.

I agree, I like useful stuff and I usually avoid giving things that have my kids' pictures on them, except to Grandma and one uncle that doesn't get to see them much and always asks for pictures. But I also try to give something else they would like along with it.

On the other hand, I like getting things that kids have made, especially ornaments. When our family is putting ornaments on our tree that have cousin's pictures on them it makes it feel like they're closer, we don't see our family often. Generally kids will put alot of work into making or picking out something for someone so I'm usually honored that they wanted to give me something, but maybe that's because I have 5 kids and can see how much love goes into these things.

Thought it was just me! I don't care how frugal it is, I'm not encouraging my kids to give photos of themselves to relatives as gifts!

I learned the hard way which people like homemade gifts and which do not.

The person I crocheted a holiday afghan for didn't like it at all. It was red with candycane striping on the edges with green trim. Then again, I don't send Hallmark full priced cards like she does. Her holiday card budget is probably what I spend in total for the season on everything including holiday food. :rotfl:

Some people would rather know you purchased an item with money than to know you purchased supplies with money and took the time to make them something they can't use.

I do gift cards now... but I make homemade envelopes to put them in. :thumbsup2
I can't believe someone didn't like a homemade afghan!!!! Good grief. Why bump a 2 year old thread?
