We're on the DDP, and have dinner booked at Homecomin' in Disney Springs. I was wondering if, while on the dining plan, it is possible to order one of the starters (for example: the Thigh High Chicken Biscuits) instead of one of their 'Mains"? Could the starter be substituted as the Entree on the dining plan?

You can always ask, but normally, the restaurants will not allow you to do so. They get reimbursed for what is on the plan, so if you don't order an entree, the system won't see your app as the entree. The restaurant would only get reimbursed for your dessert and drink.

The DDP is pretty restrictive in this manner. Generally, an "entree" has to come from the entree section of the menu.

It's one of the biggest reasons we don't do the DDP. You cannot order how you want to order...you have to order how Disney wants you to order.

Unlikel,y especially at the third party restaurants, like Homecomin', which are only reimbursed according to the rules of the dining plan so a dish has to be on the entree section of the menu to qualify as an entree. The Disney owned restaurants, however, have more leeway on what qualifies on the DDP, so there might be some that will allow you to order an app as your entree. You'll have to ask at each restaurant.

We have sort of the same dilemna. We know that our son is going to want that app instead of an entree, while the rest of us are going to get entrees (there are a total of four of us). Our plan is to use three table service credits for the meal, and then save our son's table service credit for another meal later on that we otherwise pay out of pocket for.

That's what I was thinking of doing too.

Many times a restaurant will make a larger, entree sized appetizer and obviously bill it as an entree.
