homebound

We've been debating the possibility of having our son declared homebound and his pediatrician brought it up today and felt it to be the best option at this time. It will entitle him to educational support through the school district, as well as help financially. I know this is a good thing, but it still bothers me. Any BTDT advice?

Depends on the school district and your son's needs. When my kids have been homebound, they ended up seeing a teacher and the therapists maybe once a month each. I didn't fight it since keeping them healthy was more important to me. Karen

Under IDEA, once you have a classification the schools must provide a free and appropriate education even if you child is in a hospital or homebound. a formal medical statement is helpful but not needed to start the process

We don't really care too much about getting the tutoring, we're fully capable of educating him at home (I'm a former grade school teacher as well), but it would lessen some of the... something.

Many years ago (when I was teaching second grade) I had a student who was seriously injured in a car accident. She was declared "homebound" and I went to her home for an hour every afternoon after school. We were able to keep her up with the class--thanks to her mother's hard work!

The district paid me a little extra for this (her mother had asked for me to do her homebound teaching.) Some districts have special homebound teachers who have a caseload of kids they work with regularly.
