I had AHS for years and hated them with the heat of a thousand burning suns. I switched to Allied Home Warranty several years ago, and have been much happier. That's not to say I haven't had issues -- as with all the home warranty companies, you have to deal with contractors who are NOT generally the best & brightest, and the warranty company itself (as with every insurance company) would rather not pay to cover repairs if they don't have to. You just have to do your research and stick to your guns.
I have been *much* happier with their customer service, the plan covers much more than the AHS plan did, and they only serve Texas. The call-out fee is the same as AHS. I have used them so far to replace my condensing unit, and replace a ceiling fan. The first job had issues -- too much miscommunication and run-around and a contractor who was less than helpful/efficient/capable/speedy...
But the ceiling fan replacement was easy-peasy. The guy came out, confirmed that the ancient fan had indeed bitten the dust, and scheduled to come back out at a later time to replace it. Since they'll reimburse you up to $50 (I think, might be more) for the fan, I found one I liked myself for less than that and he came back to put it in for no additional charge since it was considered part of the same service call. I faxed in the receipt, and they sent a check to me within a week or so.
I recommend them as much as I recommend any sort of insurance company -- I truly hate them all, lol.

But as I am not independently wealthy and would have a hard time just replacing a fridge or something (or a condensing unit) if it died, I am thankful to at least have the option of a home warranty company... And so far, Allied has made me a lot happier than AHS ever did.
