Home resort choice and booking - accessible / bench seat showers

My wife and I are considering buying DVC and are seeking the wisdom of this group on specific questions about home resort choice. A bit of background:

We have 4 girls aged 7-14 and anticipate we'll be traveling as a party of 6 for the next 8-10 years if not longer. As such we'd typically choose a two-bedroom though it seems 2 connecting studios at PVB might also suit. We're currently pondering a ~300 point total purchase to fund about 5-7 days / year of stays.

Our oldest daughter requires the use of a wheelchair. We can assist her with transfers, so our most significant requirement for her is an accessible seat in a shower (she can sit upright independently). We can guide her over a low wall / step into a shower with a bench or accessible fold-down seat, though of course a roll-in shower is ideal. My understanding is that all the DVC properties have roll-in showers and I have also seen in videos that some have bench seats in showers even in non-accessible units (like PVB studios).

What I'm not sure about is how hard it is to book accessible 2-bedrooms / connecting studios / SSR treehouse villas etc. We would typically be looking at those types of rooms at this ~300 point level (i.e. not the really big tickets like grand villas / pvb bungalows etc.).

Questions for the group:

1. Do you have experience booking rooms with accessible showers as described above, and how easy or hard have you found it to get these rooms across different DVC properties? Have you found any to be easier / harder / virtually impossible to book?

2. Is the real issue the general availability at the resorts, regardless of accessible room/shower? In other words, the real problem is getting *any* room during busy times, and there's no real difference looking at accessible vs. not accessible?

3. Are you aware of bench seat showers in specific resorts (even if they are not technically roll in showers)? From scouring through videos I think I've seen benches in showers at PVB studios and possibly also BLT, CCV, Riviera?? Any others?

And of course any other relevant input you can give me is appreciated! I did a few searches on these boards (including the dis-abilities threads) but didn't see these issues addressed. Thank you!

I can say for certain that all rooms in the original VGF building have bench seats in at least one of the room's showers.

The "resort studios" do not have them. I believe.

I just stayed in a one bedroom at BLT that definitely had the bench in the master bathroom, and the other bathroom had a shower/tub combo with no bench.

Welcome to DVC! There are accessible rooms in all categories in all resorts. Roll in showers are large and barrier free and have a seat (there is a specific category for these). Different resorts have different types of seats but fold down from the wall. You can also request a shower seat when you get there from mousekeeping (I give a tip) for the bathroom as it will come in handy.

I find the beds really tall if we're in a regular room (I bring a grab bar for the tub) and I have to use the ottoman to get in bed, so that is another issue to think about when booking early. I'd also go for the 2 BR so you have a washer/dryer and kitchen. I can't tell you what a lifesaver that is!

11 months at your home resort is ideal though I've been able to get this category many times at 7 months if my dates/resorts are flexible. I would not recommend this for a big family (it's just DH and I most of the time).

Your home resort choice involves ease of getting to parks of choice. Monorail resorts will get you to/from MK without dealing with a bus or rental car. We don't own at BWV but often book there to get into EPCOT from the International Gate.

I'm sure there is much more I haven't thought of...others will chime in! Good luck!

We are kind of in the same situation. We are a family of 4 adults and our son who uses a chair is 23 and lives/travels with us. On the rare occasion our other son can get away to come. We book 2 bedrooms no matter what. He can transfer and use a tub with seat if needed. Good upper body strength. Bed height never an issue

We are VERY new to DVC but have played around a ton with booking and looking at different rooms so I can offer what I have learned.

First, it was interesting, especially at RIV to find out that none of the 1 or 2 bed rooms STANDARD view have a roll in shower. They are all preferred view. We want standard as that is actually fireworks view in most cases.

I’ve also looked and have noticed we may not necessarily need an accessible room in GF or RIV or OKW as those rooms are pretty big. In OKW though you would absolutely need ground floor. But those bathrooms seem doable.

Another thing that I don’t particularly like is like in the Treehouse Villas those reg master bathrooms would work and I would LOVE the tub but you can’t get in the unit if you don’t get an “accessible”. You have to have a ramped villa and they have the crappy roll-in shower. We do have this booked for Christmas and I am hoping they are more updated than the only video I can find that was done in 2009.

I like the gorgeous tubs and they are missing in most of the accessible units to make more space in the bathroom. Sigh…..

We have an Owners Locker to store a tub chair so we aren’t calling housekeeping to get a gross used one if we decide on a tub/rails option instead of roll in shower.

Edit: I tried to message you with some other info but its seems you can’t yet. When you get the availability feel free to reach out

The Tree House Villas were recently updated. Here's a video that's about a year old:

I’ve seen that one but it is not an accessible unit. As far as I am aware and we have looked extensively the only video online of the accessible tree house villas was done in 2009. We will be uploading one when we stay at Christmas

Thanks so much, I tried to figure out how to message you but I can't... Maybe I need permissioning of some sort? Or my account is too new?

Edit: I followed you and changed a permission, maybe it'll work now...

That would be helpful - and if you have made any others showing accessibility features I'd be interested to see them.

I don't know if you can share youtube links on here or not, but if so once they're up I'll check them out.
Jump into some other convos on the board and then we can chat :) If you are thinking of buying resale you really should be following the ROFR thread anyway
