My wife and I are considering buying DVC and are seeking the wisdom of this group on specific questions about home resort choice. A bit of background:
We have 4 girls aged 7-14 and anticipate we'll be traveling as a party of 6 for the next 8-10 years if not longer. As such we'd typically choose a two-bedroom though it seems 2 connecting studios at PVB might also suit. We're currently pondering a ~300 point total purchase to fund about 5-7 days / year of stays.
Our oldest daughter requires the use of a wheelchair. We can assist her with transfers, so our most significant requirement for her is an accessible seat in a shower (she can sit upright independently). We can guide her over a low wall / step into a shower with a bench or accessible fold-down seat, though of course a roll-in shower is ideal. My understanding is that all the DVC properties have roll-in showers and I have also seen in videos that some have bench seats in showers even in non-accessible units (like PVB studios).
What I'm not sure about is how hard it is to book accessible 2-bedrooms / connecting studios / SSR treehouse villas etc. We would typically be looking at those types of rooms at this ~300 point level (i.e. not the really big tickets like grand villas / pvb bungalows etc.).
Questions for the group:
1. Do you have experience booking rooms with accessible showers as described above, and how easy or hard have you found it to get these rooms across different DVC properties? Have you found any to be easier / harder / virtually impossible to book?
2. Is the real issue the general availability at the resorts, regardless of accessible room/shower? In other words, the real problem is getting *any* room during busy times, and there's no real difference looking at accessible vs. not accessible?
3. Are you aware of bench seat showers in specific resorts (even if they are not technically roll in showers)? From scouring through videos I think I've seen benches in showers at PVB studios and possibly also BLT, CCV, Riviera?? Any others?
And of course any other relevant input you can give me is appreciated! I did a few searches on these boards (including the dis-abilities threads) but didn't see these issues addressed. Thank you!
