Home heating question

We have one of each - a heat pump, a regular central air unit and a mini split. Three level house. We use electricity for the heat pump unless it gets freakishly cold here in Georgia. We previously had 2 heat pumps, which couldn’t seem to heat or cool our house.

The new units are all less than 5 years old. We paid less than $10,000 for all three. Our electricity bill is usually around $100 per month, except in the hottest and coldest months of the year, when it could reach $200.

I wouldn’t really recommend one over the other. All 3 seem to work great.

We are in Georgia as well. When our heat pump went out we replaced it with a standard AC unit. We already had a natural gas furnace as back up heat. The gas furnace heats the house much better than the heat pump ever did.

Heat pumps are efficient if your house is properly insulated. Our previous 1950s house was not, and the heat pump would frequently switch to emergency heat, which drove the bills sky high.

Older thread recently revived, but where you live and how well insulated your house is makes a difference on what sort of HVAC system will be most cost effective. I believe this is another recent thread that discusses that. Heat pump is probably not the best solution in colder climates, natural gas tends to be more cost effective for winter heating.
