Anybody else out there dislike Home Depot as much as me? I had to buy a new door knob for the screen door. I went to the local hardware store first and they did not have anything I liked. So I went over to Home Depot and what a aweful place it is.

Could they do anything else to make it a worse shopping experience? First the doors are set up so you must go in at one end and out at the other. That means in the rain you have walk outside for a long time either coming in or going out. That is not fun when the weather is bad like it was today. Then you have to trek across the entire monmouth store to get to where you need to be. You can't find anyone to help you. When you do they just point you toward an aisle. After you go up and down the aisle looking for the item you need and can't find it, you need to go back and find someone again to help you. Again they just point to some thing and do not really help you.

All the time there is that aweful beaping sound from the forklift and the blaring of announcements over a horrible PA system. The lighting is less than easy on the eyes. No wonder after just 15 minutes in there I get a headache. I really try to avoid going there at any cost, but sometimes (like today) you have no choice. Finally I just gave up and drove 20 minutes to Lowes, which is only slightly better. At least they had what I was looking for, sort of. Oh well, just part of the fun of owning a home. Jay

Isnt Lowes set up the same way? I know I go out the in door at Lowes, I will try at Home Depot next time, but I think you can. Love both stores, spend way too much time at both.

I like them both. My hubby swears that Lowe's has better lumber ( I wouldn't know anything about that..) but Home Depot has better windows. I like them both. :)

Because I have no DIY skills whatsoever, I've only been in a Home Depot a couple of times. However, I'm in Best Buy regularly, and the thing about the blaring announcements sure rings true. When someone gets paged in that store it makes me jump. Maybe I need to stick with the decaf. :)

I went to the local hardware store first and they did not have anything I liked.
This is the main reason why Home Depot and Lowes are so successful. As a warehouse, they can stock a far greater variety of options in a smaller space.

I personally can't stand Home Depot. After the treatment I got there when I was going refrigerator shopping I swore I'd never go back, and I haven't. Give me Lowe's any day.

Yes Lowes is set up the same way, but for some reason Home Depot seems worse. Certainly inside HD is noisier and the lighting is horrible. I just can not stand it and I really do not think that I am a fussy person. Maybe I am getting fussier in my old age. Thanks for the replies. I guess I am in the minority on this one. Have a good New Years. Jay :confused3

Home Depot use to be alot better. 4-5 yrs ago you could go in there and every asile had someone working in it and they knew what they were talking about. Now it seems like only 25% of the asiles have someone working, and usually 3 or 4 of them are gather together in 1 place so it's even more difficult to find someone. Then when you do it seems there's only 1 person in the store that knows anything and he needs to be tracked down.

It is a hit or miss with either of them.

There is a locla hardware store that I try to shop because of the service.

BUt it does cost me a little bit more by doing so.

You get what you pay for.

I've never been to Home Depot, but we have a Lowe's here. I really like Lowes. :confused3

Our local Home Depot still has lots of helpful staff, and they take you to whatever you are looking for, not just point you down an aisle. As for the 'in one door and out another', most home improvement stores, Targets, Wal-Marts, and grocers here do the same thing. Just gotta be prepared for the weather!

I'll be sure to tell my uncle the positive comments about Lowe's. He's a DM with them. Been there for 20+ years. He's very proud of this company.

The Home Depot closest to us is 70 miles away and the service is HORRIBLE. I have been to other Home Depots that are good. I prefer Lowes, but the closest one is 2 1/2 hours away. I saw some ceiling tile that looks like tin in another Lowe's in another state and went to the Lowe's closest to us to order it. They called me the day after my order to thank me for the order and to see if I had any questions, etc. They called to tell me my order was in and then called a couple days later to remind me it was in. I told the gal where we lived and I would be in the following weekend to pick it up. After we picked it up they called again to see if we were happy with everything. I like this kind of service.

My local HD has that "in one out the other" set up, but I found that you can still enter the "exit", it does have the motion sensor on the outside. You just have to walk through one of the empty cashier lanes. So we park by the "exit" and enter that way! We also avoid the "special offer" people trying to sell us stuff at the real entrance.

The sales persons at our HD seem to be quite nice & some are actually knowledgeable.
DH prefers the lumber at our local hardware/lumber yard, (Yay! Country 3 Corners!) says it is a better grade & slightly cheaper than HD or Lowe's.
He is an avid woodworker-
Plus the local sales people are steeped in knowledge or can put you in touch with those who are--if you need to hire out a job, they know who does good work & is reliable

I can get picky re: hardware, so I either shop via catalog or go to the big decorator showrooms. when we were re-doing our rental property HD/Lowe's was just fine enough, though.
do agree about that lighting & the exit/entrances

Jean
