Home Depot Paint - Behr is that the best?

I am not considering the primer as a coat, if i included that it would have been 1 coat of primer, 3 coats of paint (and it still looked like crap)
I followed the directions off the scotch website for tape removal directions, so while I value the random advice of message boarders, in this case I will defer to the manufacturer....which I followed exactly.

My neighbor is a professional painter, and i just asked him about Behr - he just laughed at me for even suggesting it and said he would *never* use it

Did he say what brand(s) he prefers?

Hmm, that's interesting. I used Behr paint to paint most of my house (now, this was 10 years ago, don't know if they've changed it), and used Sherwin Williams paint for another room or two, and MUCH preferred the Behr paint. I felt like it covered much better than the other paint.

I totally feel the opposite -- can't stand Behr, am OK with Sherwin Williams and love Benjamin Moore.

BUT..if you have a home Depot gift card, I would just go with Behr paint and expect to put on AT LEAST 2 coats since it doesn't cover very well.

Home Depot also sells Martha Stewart Paint and another brand I can't think of off the top of my head. You may want to consider those brands as well.

My painter stopped using Benjamin Moore with the reformulation that happened maybe 4 years ago.

For exterior painting he prefers Sherman Williams.

For interior he is less picky, I picked up the Behr primer paint last time (this was a last minute job--normally he gets the paint) and he was impressed. He still put on 2 coats, but it looked pretty good with only the one. He has also used a brand called I think California something when painting inside.

We have had excellent results with Behr paints. I have used a primer and Behr paint, and also the Behr Ultra. Both have worked very well in my house. I would not hesitate to use it again.

I just painted my kitchen with Martha Stewart paint and I loved it. I was painting over yellow with a sand beige and it went on well and covered in only one coat.

Wow, lots of different opinions on this thread! I'm going to be painting soon so I am curious about all this. I have no clue about paint brands!

Definetly go with alien green.;) and think of us each time you look at it.:lmao:

All I know is that we used Behr in my daughter's bedroom and it still looks like we just painted it yesterday,5.5 years later.

When we did the living room, we cheaped out and went to Walmart (it's a really big room and it connects to both hallways with nothing to break it up, so we had to do it all in one shot). Worst mistake ever! We decided from then on,nothing but Behr... we also tried a test patch with Lowe's paint and it was horrible. I really didn't like it.

I tested a sample of Behr and not only did it provide much less coverage than comparably priced paint from Lowes, but it was a darker color (red) and it turned white every time you brushed against it. I don't mean it burnished or got shiny, it was WHITE. Would never consider using it after that.

We always use the Freshaire paint from Home Depot. Our DS has allergies, so we wanted a paint that won't smell. It works so great for us! Great coverage and we can paint anytime we want without odor. Just another option for you to think about! :goodvibes

Red paint (most primary colored paint) has a clear base and needs a dark primer. We painted red on white walls. The guy at the counter suggested a grey primer and we ignored him, had to do 5 coats to get it covered. Decided to do another wall in red and this time listened and used a grey primer and only needed two coats of red (could have gotten away with one, but really like how the look of a second coat) and looks awesome (Behr primer and paint).

I love Behr paints and always use a primer (either tinted or grey) and have never had a problem. I love how it holds up.

A lack of primer wasn't the issue. First, the paint was going over dark taupe walls, and the Home Depot guy told us we didn't need primer since we weren't going dark to light or vice versa. Second, none of the other color swatches had primer either, and yet they all covered *much* better than the Behr. And finally, the red paint turning white when rubbed didn't happen to any other brand. I'm glad the Behr worked for you, but I will not use or recommend it.

I don't like Behr because its thicker and even a small room, one can won't be enough and I may STILL have to do a 2nd coat.. With others, like Sherwin or some Lowe's brands, I can do a gallon for a room with 2 coats and still have left over and it come out good.

I refuse to use Behr. i'm not shelling $50 or so for 1 room.

Before getting too far in to this post I should probably mention that I used to work at Home Depot in the paint department.

Behr trim paint literally peels off....we repainted our kitchen cabinets (latex over latex) and if you catch a fingernail on the paint, it scrapes it off.

The reason that BEHR paint does this is because it is an Acrylic Latex very similar to Duron as opposed to a regular latex paint. When the glosses dry they tend to take on plastic like properties and tend to peel when tape is removed. I've had this problem as well. The first problem may have been paint prep. I believe someone already suggested TSP (TriSodium Phosphate) for cleaning, but semi-gloss and gloss paint require the surface to be lightly sanded to create adhesion.

That is hard to believe since it is such crappy paint. Most professionals use Ben Moore as well. NIght and day difference. If you tried it, you would see.

What most professionals use is whatever is cheapest in their particular region or where they can get the best discounts. Benjamin Moore is good paint (not the pro-grade), but in our area the professionals tend to use Duron. Both professional grades are more like chalk water than actual paint.

You may be thinking of Glidden and Ralph Lauren. IMO Ralph Lauren (manufactured by Sherwin Williams) is the best paint requiring the fewest coats for dark colors that is available at Home Depot.

Grey primer is definitely the way to go with reds. I even went so far as to shoot 1oz or more of magenta into grey primer.

I havent tried Behr but I really like Valspar from lowes. We tried using that paint that was for kids room in case they write on the wall it will come off, I cant remember the brand of it but it was horrible. I emailed the company and they asked me for my receipt which I did not have so I just learned a lesson and went to lowes and bought valspar and had to paint it again. I dont remember the name but we bought it at menards.

We use Valspar from Lowes a lot, too and really like it as well.

this has not been my experience with Behr paint at all. We repainted this house completely before we moved into it, kids rooms, bathrooms, our rooms, living/dining room and the kitchen. It took 1 coat and 1 gallon to do the hall bath and the kitchen, I know, I painted them myself all alone. I also had paint left in both cans so when we repainted after the fire (we wanted the same colors in some of the house) I simply pulled the cans down from the garage (only part of the house not ruined by the fire) storage shelves and wrote down the names of the paint, walked into HD to our consultant and said "I want this paint for the hall bath, this paint for the kitchen, this paint for our bedroom" etc etc. We did chose new colors for our bathroom, the kids rooms and the living/dining room when we rebuilt.
My point is, I was able to use 1 gallon and paint 1 room with great coverage with plenty of paint left for touching up. Oh and I did not use the same colors in the kitchen and hall bath, the kitchen is a pale yellow and bathroom is a pale blue. :)

I wonder if the inconsistencies in personal experiences has anything to do with how the paint is mixed...or if it's the fact that we used flat paint thru-out the house, even in the kitchen and baths. I don't like the glossy look of semi or high gloss paints so we have flat everywhere. :)

We often get Home Depot Gift Cards from our Credit Card rewards program and I've never had a problem with Behr paint. I painted our kitchen cabinets about 5 years ago and I have no chipping or peeling at all - and I wipe them down quite often.

It is kind of funny to see so many different opinions on this thread.
