I was unpleasantly surprised when I learned of the high cost for my DS to rent a tux for his high school Prom. Yikes.

Anyone have any tips on where to go for the best deal, or any coupons that may be available?

Prom tuxes are crazy expensive. Try to talk him into a new suit--lots of guys are doing that these days so he wouldn't be the oddball. You can usually find good deals for off-the-rack suits. If he's going to college he can use it for the occasional dress up event; he can wear it to weddings, funerals and job interviews.

Edited to add: if he's set on a tux, you might check the store in person. It seemed to me that when we used the "prom" coupon that the school sent home we were directed to a collection of tuxes that were higher in price. Retailmenot might also have some but again, the coupon might be for a select group of tuxes.

I just rented a tux for my DH (not prom) and had a $40 off coupon from Men's Wearhouse that I was able to apply at Jos A Banks. It was a prom coupon but worked on any tux rental. Brought his total down to $110 (no vest or shoes).

Do you have a Men's Wearhouse by you? They offer a 40% off prom tux rental coupon. DS rents the basic (non designer) black tux with black cummerbund (or you can get a black vest), bow tie, and white tux shirt. He does not purchase the pocket square. He has his own shoes from military school. It was $65 after the coupon. You have to rent at least 7 days before your event or they will tack on a $20 rush fee.

It is the designer names like Vera Wang and Calvin Klein, colored vests & bow ties, and colored tuxes that run the price waaaaaay up.

The basic black is so stylish...DS looks like James Bond!

My husband just bought a tux at JC Penny. Ferrar slim cut. I think it was about 100 to buy it. Maybe 120 with the shirt and cummerbund.

I don't know where you live, but here in small town Oklahoma, the department stores Stage, and Goody rent tuxes. They have coupons on their websites. DS17 rented a designer tux, slim fit pants ( they charge more, but worth it if he's skinny), upgraded shirt, bow tie, vest, and purchased a pocket square. It was $150, including tax, using the $20 off coupon.
Try googling the name of the store you would rent it from, plus the words tux coupon.
Good Luck!

Tux rentals are so high that you can often just buy one for the same price or less. Amazon has some that are under $100, although the shirt and tie will be extra.

FWIW.... my DS decided that he and his new girlfriend (from another town) wanted to go to both proms (his and hers). I decided to search for a dark suit for him figuring since it is his junior year, he would get at least two years out of it (and he has pretty much stopped growing anyhow). I figured I'd start low (with the thrift stores) and work my way up.

First day out I got lucky and found an actual tuxedo, but the jacket sleeves were just way too short (he has long monkey arms!), but I didn't give up and I found (later that week) a full men's suit, black, very current style (yes, men's suit styles change and can look very dated). Took it home and it fit DS pretty well (sleeves were plenty long enough, shoulders fit well, chest/ab a little loose, but we can deal with that for $25!!). Had it dry cleaned (that was almost as expensive as the suit itself) and it looked wonderful!

I bought him a brand new crisp white shirt and a selection of ties [black solids and patterns, both regular and bow ties], (his girlfriend's dress was black so they wanted a full black and white look) and pocket squares (those stupid things were really expensive!)....the ones he didn't want will get returned.... and he looked SUPER dashing! Fortunately he already owned good quality black dress shoes and a black belt.

When all is said and done, including the expensive pocket square and the dry cleaning I will have spent under $100 to fully clothe DS for both proms! And he still has the suit/shirt to use next year!

Considering it could have cost me $100 per prom to rent a tux, I figure I am well ahead of the game!..........P
