I'm hoping to visit the Holy Land Experience during my upcoming trip to WDW. My schedule allows for Saturday, January 29 or Monday January 31. Any reports/tips anyone could give me would be helpful. Thanks

I've gone a few times. It's very enjoyable....try to go early and follow the schedule so that you're sure to see all the exhibits and shows. If you go early enough you can see everything there and take in all the things there are to see and hear. The little guide they give you will list the times. It's a wonderful thing to see and experience. There are no rides...just exhibits, shows and demonstrations. All the people who work there are very talented....I know that I will never be able to get to the Holy Land itself...and this certainly made me feel like I had experienced a little of it. Have a wonderful time!

Thanks "lovethattink" and Barbara! Do you remember how long you stayed at HLE? Did it take a full day, a half day? How long would you advise? I have the basics ... go early and followthe schedule!

Hey "lovethattink" I have a 12 y.o. DD, a petite blonde. I call her tinkerbell some times. Shes cute and she has the occasionally pouty attitude.

Hi Again.....Barbara here...all the times I've been there, I stayed all day - and the day went fast!! I marked my guide by the times things started and found myself with very little time left over ...(or grab a bite to eat!!), but that may have been my own fault because I really was into what I was seeing and hearing. I've been a few times in the summer, but mostly I've gone in the fall. Some of the events are outside and during the summer it was extremely hot. We go to Orlando twice a year..summer and fall. (We've now changed that and will be going early spring and fall, because we found the summer to be too hot - even though we're from Texas!!!). I believe that it closes about 6ish.....and I got there about 10. The rest of my time I spend at Disney...just love that place! Have a good time!

Friends are going on a Sunday when their open 12-6. Is this enough time? How much milage do you put on your feet, she'll be running the WDW Marathon in the AM. How long is the drive time from WDW?

TIA!

Sue: Good questions. Hey Barbara, can you help with this? ... How does the walking compare to WDW? As to distance ...

see their website ... holylandexperience.com for directions

The Holy Land Experience is located in Orlando alongside Interstate 4, Exit 78 (old 31A), at the corner of Conroy and Vineland Rds., immediately off the I-4 exit ramp.
From the south and west: Take I-4 East to Exit 78 (old 31A). Turn left on Conroy Rd. Go to Vineland Rd. Turn right, and our entrance is on the right.

Hwy 192 south of WDW intersects I-4 at Exit 64. So the HLE exit is only 14 miles from that point.

Sorry - haven't been able to get to my computer......Holy Land isn't near as big as Disney....you can cover the whole thing easily in the time you're there. There are many times you'll be sitting down enjoying the music or listening to things. There are lots of places to just rest. I wish you well on your marathon.....I've never done one...so I can't even try to tell you if the day will be too long or tiresome for you, if you go to the Holy Land after it. You can just pick and choose what you want to see or do from the guide you will get...if you feel like it you're tired - you could just pick out the things that don't require standing alot. The Tabernacle exhibit is wonderful, very relaxing and you do get to sit through it. The show outside at the Temple is also very wonderful, uplifting and again - there are chairs to sit on. We have a timeshare at Orange Lake, and it takes me about 40 minutes from there to the Holy Land, of course that depends on the traffic and the time of year. Once I get on 4, it's a straight shot. Another thing...this time of year, you shouldn't encounter a very big crowd there. - in fact, anytime I was there, I never found that was any problem seeing anything or waiting for anything. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have...I'm planning to go again in May. Of course..I'm big on Disney, but the Holy Land is something entirely different and that's what makes it so special. The people who work there are amazing! Let me know how you did when you return....safe traveling!! Barb

Have you put anything about your trip here on the boards for us to look at? If not, sorry to rush you! :p Just interested in your experience. TIA

Thanks for asking. I've been delaying this report while I did the "clean up all that happened while I was gone" dance.

I went to the Holy Land Experience on Monday, January 31st. I had good directions and had no problem getting from Pop Century to HLE.

I arrived a few minutes before the gates opened. I was surprised at the lack of secrurity for the animals. They were easily accessible from the parking lot. I hope they take them elsewhere in the evening.

As you walk in the gate it's like walking through the gate of a walled city into a street market area. After passing a well stocked bookstore and a Petra-like rocky area where they plan to put a Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit later you pass the garden tomb. Then turn a corner and find yourself facing a scaled down model of the temple. It's quite a sight. They have seating and a stage in front of the temple. Its there that they do some of their shows. To the right of the temple, behind the Petra-like rock formation is a building housing an exhibit on the Tabernacle. Go on past the temple to the left to the Oasis Palms Cafe (good food) then to another building housing a scale model of Jerusalem. I do need to note that there is no sign or designated entrance to the scale model of Jerusalme. When I asked I was pointed to a reddish door on the way ot the Scriptorium.

The Scriptorium is an interesting building. It holds a collection of historical Biblical manuscripts in a series of vignettes. The tour has computerized lighting with a narration track that guides you through the different rooms explaining the history of Biblical manuscript production. For me there are 3 highlights: an audio-animatronic figure of John Wycliff, pages from a Gutenberg Bible, and the finale ... paintings of heros of the Bible. While I did enjoy the exhibit and felt it was the best produced in the park I did feel that I was rushed through. There were 15-20 people in our group and it was difficult to give everyone a chance to look at the exhibit before the lighting and narration pulled us to the next room.

Let me back up toward the front gate and mention a few other things. The Wilderness Tabernacle exhibit was a lecture with an interesting shadow screen conclusion. Near the Tabernacle exhibit is a children's activity section with room to play and room for group activities as well. The Book store feasures novelty souvenirs from the Holy Land as well as books written for tourists in the Holy Land. Provides good resources for Sunday School and Bible study.

I was impressed by the restaurant. They featured a mediteranean style lunch with baclava for dessert.

There were a number of scheduled shows during the day, evrything from an auction which demonstrated common everyday articles from the time to music and dramatic monologues. It was a full day.

I would recommend HLE as a good experience for Christians visiting the Orlando area. I'm sure it would be even more fun to visit during a holy season but I really don't want to be in Orlando at Christmas or around Easter.

Hope I've answered some of your questions. Write me with more and I'd be glad to respond.

is it suitable for kids? dh and i are interested but not if it means a hot day of whining children! LOL!

GorshGoofy: Thanks for all the information! I've got to send the link of your post to my DH at work so he can look it over! He and I have both been interested in thoughts about this experience. Sounds like a real possibility for our visit this coming summer, although I've heard it is very, very hot there at that time and much of the drama/presentations is outside in the sun w/little to no shade. So, I've got to decide, like the person above me has posted, whether 3 potentially whining kids (alas, 1 is a female teenager!!!!Yikes!!!) is something we should undertake ;) Thanks again for your info. :flower:

my vote is to leave the teenager in charge of the whining children somewhere else, like at the hotel pool and may i borrow your teenager? ;)

LOL! Too funny!! :rotfl2: Sounds great in theory! But probably not a sound idea for us though. (on a more serious note, said teenager has some special needs so she does really good for shorter babysitting chores such as me & DH's trips to the store or a local neighborhood place to eat, but longer jaunts require different babysitting accomodations---certainly not her fault, just the way it is :goodvibes ) So, back to the original quandry. Well, at least there's plenty of time to decide!!! :earsgirl:

You are welcome! I must admit that many of the presentations would be outside. The temple stage does have an awning that shades the seating area. I was glad that I could go when I did. You may want to combine a visit to HLE with an afternoon of swiming. While there are presentations that could keep you there all day you may want to limityour visit to 4-5 hours . Just a suggestion. I do think you would enjoy being there.

thanks again, GorshGoofy. Good to know there was at least some covering/shading over the sitting area where the performances are held. HLE is still a real possibility for us, so I do appreciate your relaying of your 1st hand experiences!
