I just went to the doctor because I wanted to start a healthy diet. I am 31, I have a 15 month old boy and I can barely squeeze my fat butt into my size 16 jeans. I am 5'5 and a half, don't forget the half, and I have been overweight most of my adult life. So, as I was saying, I went to the doctor to discuss my options, thinking low carb, weight watchers, praying to Jesus, and he asks me to get on the scale. I hate the scale. I more than hate the scale. I get on there and I am 215 lbs. I was in shock. More than shock, I thought I was going to die. If there was nothing in the world that could have shocked me into getting healthier it was that. The doctor tells me that a healthy weight for me is 144 lb. I am 71 lb.'s overweight. How did this happen? The doctor offered me a drug to assist me with my weight loss. It's called Phentermine. Has anyone heard of this? I am a little weary of taking any drug, but it's supposed to be an appetite suppresent. Any words of wisdom?

Just believe you can do it! Little by little, day by day. I haven't heard of that drug (although I don't keep in the loop of weight loss drugs :) ). I hope someone else can be of more help but I just wanted to say good luck and YOU CAN DO IT!!!!

Thank you so much! I start the meds today. I will be posting a journal to keep myself in line. :)

The doctor's office was a day of reckoning for me, too. I avoided scales and was stunned one year to hear the nurse say two-forty-five. Surely she was talking about someone's appointment time. Nope, it was me. All 5'4" of me - no half ; )

That was probably 1999. Today I am in the 180s. I ride my bike to work and have started a running program. It's been slow and sometimes unsteady, but I am soooo much healthier.

Eat less, move more. Look for ways to add steps to your day. Get a pedometer and try to take 10000 steps a day. Take a flight of stairs, don't troll for the best parking spot. Nothing happens over night.

I use fitday.com to journal food. Declaring every little morsel really slows me down.

YOU CAN DO IT. We can help.

I'm not one to go for medicine to help with healthy eating choices as a first choice. That said, if you have your doc onboard with what is going on with you, then you really need to work with doc. Have you talked about changing your eating and increasing your activity along with the meds?

No matter what, if you use the doc's medical assistance you will still need to learn to eat via healthy choices and if possible increased activity.

Whatever you choose, we are here to help. Sometimes helping others as here you also find it helps you.

OH boy I know where you are coming from!! I hate the scale so much too.
I've been on Phentermine a couple of times and I have lost a good amount of weight on it. But I just didn't like how it made my heart race. so I stopped taking it after a few weeks.
Good luck!!

Phenteramine can be useful for people with significant weight problems (over 50 pounds overweight) One of the problems with medications for weight loss is that some will depend on the medicaction and not learn the changes that they must make in their lifestyles. Without lifestyle changes one will regain the weight (and usually more) once the medicaction is discontinued.

It sounds like you are committed to the changes that must be made. As MickeyHereWeCome said, it can cause some palpitations but these usually subside with time.

Good Luck. I'm sure you can do it!!:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2
