There really isn't too much available at Hollywood studios. Other than backlot you got the pizza place or abc. All the other ones you are eating outside. A lot of people use sci fi not too much more than counter service. Once toy story land comes and Star Wars land I'm sure we will be getting some good ones.
My favorite is to leave DHS and walk to the Swolphin poolside place Cabanas or on to Epcot I'll happily walk 15-20 minutes to get a better lunch! I do it at home, why not on vacation?
While not CS per se - the lounge at HBD is really good and probably not much more spendy than most cs.
They closed my absolute favorite, Staring Rolls. They had amazing sandwiches and were a great place to blow snack credits on baked goods.
My second favorite was Fairfax Fare because it used to service chargrilled chicken and ribs; but now it serves something that resembles Mexican food, but not really. Most other places serve the standard hamburger, chicken sandwich, salad combos you see at the standard Disney QS. Hopefully when Star Wars Land and Toy Story Land get up and running, they will have some more interesting offerings.
we actually enjoyed lunch at PizzeRizzo - the pizza was good, the meatball sandwich (both came with small side salads) was good and there was plenty of seating
Rosies makes a good fried green tomato sandwich
Backlot Express has good burgers

I second this - the QS is not great. We either eat outside the park (usually EP) or if our schedule has us stuck there, we opt for HDB lounge, which is not too much more expensive that QS.
Disney Hollywood studios is severely lacking in the counter serve department. I have a hard time eating their once I definitely would not eat there twice.
We actually like the ABC Commissary. We like the burgers, but we are excited that the Fairfax Fare chicken & ribs are there now. They have different lunch and dinner menus now, so we are excited to try that.

My sister and I also really enjoyed the fried green tomato sandwich!
I love the Cobb salad at the HBD, so I made a lunch ADR for August. It should end up being a cheaper "signature" meal to get a couple of salads and an app.
I agree that HS has terrible QS options. Does the 50's Prime Time Lounge have the same regular menu as the regular restaurant? That would be my vote or else just go to EPCOT.
