Holidays at Daycares?

That is simply not true. I am a professional. My wife is a professional. My best friend is a professional. My sister is a professional.

None of us get the day after Thanksgiving off paid.

I do and my husband does. Aound here it is standadr priactice. Very few "professional" offices are open.

But their profit does go up. They are not spending money on the food for 75 kids that they would have had to spend on those days, there are not spending money on the gas for the buses on those days, their electricity cost is reduced on those days, the hourly employees are not getting paid on the holidays so their payroll is reduced, etc. etc. etc.

Like I stated earlier, I understand that my daycare is just doing what everyone else is doing, but that doesn't change the fact that it is wrong.

Your local dentist office is probably closed on holidays, but he doesn't charge his patients for being closed. I bet the dental employees are paid. His insurance is the same. The due dates on the loans for the equipment are still due. The rent for the office is still due.

How would you feel if your dentist sent you a bill, even though you didn't go in, just because it was Thanksgiving?

My daycare doesn't provide food or bussing so that analogy doesn't hold water for me. Probably 85% of our cost when when i did daycare was personell and we paid hourly holidays based on average hours per day worked that week. I is just not the same as a dentist's office. The dentist has a much higher profit margin than a daycare. He makes a personal decision to be closed and to eat that money. Most daycares cannot afford to eat it, and As I said before you still pay the janitor his monthly rate, or the copier people their monthly rate, but you don't get service on the holidays. I equate Daycare with any other matinence account you pay a monthly rate for. When children are in private school you do not expect tuition to be lower just because there is a holiday in that month. Most daycares in this area sign a yearly contract with clients similar to a private school tuition contract, and you are responsible for a full year's tuition unless you move.

Except law offices (mine), hospitals (my sister), libraries (my wife), government offices (my mother) and at least one engineering office (my best friend).

There are exceptions to eveything. I am making a generalization. You cannot expect a child care facility to conform to your schedule and no one elses. We always did what the majority of workplaces were doing nad were closed the friday after thanksgiving and did a half day christmas eve.

I do home daycare. The contract they sign states what days I get paid for. Holidays are the only thing I get paid for. I also get paid if the child does not show up for some reason. ( sick or at Grandmas.) I do not charge for when I am on vacation or if I am sick. The state of Mn. also pays for Holidays for parents who get childcare help. I feel that if the parent has to pay for childcare somewhere else, then I do not charge them.

I think that's completely fair.

while I have to take the day off of work to stay home with my daughter.

Yes, that is what working parents have to do at times - take off to be home with their child! What if your child is sick, you still have to pay for that day even if they are not in school, and do you take a day off work to stay home with them.

The daycare my DS went to did not provide bus service or serve meals.

You should have asked for a copy of the holidays when you signed your contract, I made sure I had one so I knew if I had to take off any days. I never had a problem paying for my DS daycare, when you break it down by hour how much you are paying it is really nothing.

The company I work for did pay monthly contracts, for cleaning, service on office machines and a few others. We paid one price per month, didn't matter if there were any holidays or not. The cleaning company was still getting paid even though they didn't have to come clean.

But others are being asked to not only conform to theirs but to pay for it. My sister is a nurse. She works both Thanksgiving and the day after. So, now, she is made to pay twice for childcare (if her caregiver has those rules.)

Most daycare workers work for minimum wage. I have no problem paying for daycare on holidays so that they can get a paid hloiday. I have been in their position and blieve me daycars absolutely could not pay their workers without charging for holidays. There insurance premium for the month is still the same wether they are open or not. It was parto f the contract I signed when enrolling my child. In order for the school to continue to operate they have to do it.

I totally agree. I have no problem paying for the holiday that my DD doesn't use. I'm getting paid for the holiday; I would want my day care provider to have a paid day off as well.

Since I'm part time, I usually switch the day that DD attends if one of her days falls on a holiday. It's like a $10 fee, but I can use the time to run some errands or whatever for a few hours.

My wife just informed me that we have to pay the daycare for the two days that THEY are closed for Thanksgiving. She says that this is common for all daycares but I find it hard to believe.

Is this really a common practice?

Yep. Do you get holidays and paid vacation time at your work? So do they :).

I am amazed how many people don't think of a daycare center as a business but as employees.

FYI, I started this conversation at work and nobody here thinks it is fair to charge for days that are not holidays.

Exactly. I worked for Kindercare when I was in college. I was a teacher who was paid about a dollar over minimum. The company benefited from all of the extra charges, not us. Late fees, etc., were never passed along.

At the day care my son attends, we only pay for the days he attends. We're not expected to pay for holidays or sick days, luckily! I love his daycare staff - and this thread just made me love that place even more! :hippie:

ETA: I know his daycare is also closed on Friday which surprised me, although my son only attends 3 days a week. I was actually hoping to send him a forth day so I could go shopping Black Friday, but now I'll have to have DH stay home from work for about an hour longer so I can go out in the early morning!

:scared1:

I hadn't read this far when I first responded. I won't say what I am thinking because I am REALLY insulted and angry right now.

It is a paid holiday. Most professionals have them. Teaching is a profession. Whether they shop or travel on Black Friday is their business and their personal life.

Not all people have Black Friday, Xmas eve or the day after off. There are A LOT of people who have to work those days. Is it just Laywers and Bankers who use Day Cares and have those days off?? What about Hospital workers? Anyone working in Retail? Service people? Small business employees? My dh works for a VERY LARGE automobile dealership, and they are open every single one of those days. And our day care is closed every single one of those days.

We did get a list at the begining of the year, however they added xmas eve off in October. :scared1:

I guess i see it as......that is the employment position you choose. If you desired to be a manager at Walmart, chances are pretty darn good that you knew you would not be having the day after thanksgiving off, and as most walmarts are open 24 hrs, you would probably be working on xmas and xmas eve. Well, as a Day Care Worker, chances are good you don't get the "extra" holidays off either. Want a lot of paid holidays off, be a bank teller.

Yep.We also have to pay for the few days they close during the year for teacher inservices.

ITA. I would highly doubt the "majority" of workers get all those days off and paid  Even if in your area a lot of ppl. get them off for whatever reason, I'm sure it's more towards a 50-50 then a 90-10 as to who gets them off, so that's A LOT of ppl. the daycare center is not only inconviencing, but also making them pay extra money. I can see getting paid for the actual holiday, but anything more I think asking too much.

You want to know something funny. Lawyers and Bankers don't get Black Friday off with pay. It is a normal business day.

I guess we aren't "professionals".

Loser! :rotfl: sorry, couldn't resist. I don't get it off either, as a psychologist at a public mental health agency. I had to take it as a vacation day.

We have paid days off for Thanksgiving and the day after Thanksgiving (the only job I didn't have this day as PTO was when I worked for a stock brokerage firm) every year.

This year 4th of July was on a Thursday, so we had the 5th as a paid day off as well.

Christmas is on a Thursday as well so we have both the 25th and 26th as paid days off.

We also have January 1st and 2nd as paid days off.

My dh has the same days off as I do and he works for a law firm!

I would concur that MOST people have the day after Thanksgiving off. Unless you work in a service industry where you are considered essential. Most offices are closed these days.

My former employer actually closed down between Christmas and New Year's each year....totally paid! It actually cost them MORE to keep the building open with a skeleton staff (since it was REALLY slow and not much business was done) than it did to just send everyone home and save the heating and electricity bills!

I work as an RN, I get nothing off.I work weekends, I work at least 2 of the 3 major holidays.I work all 3 of the summer ones.Dh is a Pharmacist and he may not be in the hospital on holidays, but is required to take call from home. Most people nowadays ,do not get off the holidays...unless you work for the State,Post Office, or bank. When I was a grocery store Customer service mgr( many moons ago) I worked all the holidays and weekends too.We never closed.
