ok you guys are way ahead of me....if someone I "thought" I knew had been posting for 18 months...I would absolutely believe them...Especially if it were a special group like a military group...I'd have been scammed....:scared1:

off to read some of those threads...bet I remember I few

I am new to the boards. I appreciate this reminder. We usually give to the Angel Tree at church but I can see myself falling for something like this. I always think everyone is just like me. Why would they feel the need to do something like this? I just do not get this crazy mixed up world sometimes.

Totally off topic but the doll is not hypothetical actually. :rotfl:

We have Maplelea Dolls http://www.maplelea.com/ .

Those are adorable! Too bad DD13 has outgrown her dolls. I would totally get her one for Christmas (that I would pay for myself).

What a wonderful idea.....giving positive input and encouragement, suggestions, etc so that people can share their ideas to keep Christmas on a budget.

That's what the budget board is here for. I have gotten so many great ideas from here to help pay for our own holiday gifts. :thumbsup2

You haven't seen drama on an internet board until you have been on some of the military spouse boards. It never ceases to amaze me. :rolleyes1

Oh you must of gotten your threads mixed up. Happens to me when I have multiple windows up. This one is about being careful not to be scammed. Its sad to see this happen to good people. Its too bad we can't gift morals.

Well said!

were you ever on Cinchouse? That board was a sucking time-vortex of train wrecks. I do miss it! :rotfl:

Nope, wasn't on that one but I have seen several groups on Facebook implode lately. Wives getting mad at another wife and calling her husband's CO posing as someone else to get that husband in trouble. Ridiculous stuff!

THIS. Internet access is not a necessity of life. Anyone who truly can't afford to feed their children truly can't afford Internet.

I rarely read the Budget Board, but decided to look tonight.

Just letting people know that internet is often available free at local public libraries. And some places have programs that provide free basic cell phones to those whose income is under a certain amount.

I agree that a lot of sob stories or begging strangers on the internet for financial help are most likely scams.

I think the warning is the best way to keep on budget. There are lots of giving wonderful people here, but there are also posters that lack morals and are just waiting to take advantage of the generousity of others without regard to their financial struggles. Especially during the holidays it's good to see a gentle reminder that not everyone is truely in need, some are scammers.

UHG...There were a few that did that on the AOL MIL Spouse board too. Calling CO's, reporting OPSEC "violations", sending printed copies of posts to FRG's. Some of those people were crazy!

It's always fun when the pot accidentally lands on the kettle's thread

That happened to me. The ship was deployed. In a chatroom, my friend and I said something about the Navy that apparently offended some woman and she decided to be a little tattle tail and contact the CO in an attempt to punish my husband for what I said. My husband and my friend's husband were called into the office for a "counseling" on keeping their wives in their place  Some people just don't have exciting lives, so they want everyone else to be miserable like them.

I remember in late 2001 the boards were buzzing after 9/11. Someone was posting an outrageous story that their loved ones had been killed on 9/11 and then they became pregnant with multiples. The poster was asking for donations for the babies.

It went on for a while until someone on the DIS investigated the claims of the deceased family member and found out it was a big scam.

If you want to do something "close to home" I suggest making a phone call to your schools guidance counselor. He or she will know if there are kids in your school who need something -- a coat or a family who needs meals. You can go from there about how you wish to participate. I've never met a counselor who wasn't happy to accept a gift card annonymously that they will pass on to a family in need.

This is what we do. Even things like Angel trees and such sometimes make me wary. I have no doubt the sponsors of those trees mean well, but how do I know (or the sponsoring organization know) if these people are really in need. I KNOW our school counselor, teachers, and principals can identify children and families that truly need help.
