Holiday Reminder - It's not always what it seems!

wow, I have to say I really am pretty surprised in a way...I'm not necessarily a "regular" on any one board...I kinda flitter around when I don't have a trip up & coming, ie, the closer a trip gets, the more I'm here!

I've "met" some really great people on the disboards, some irl some not, I guess I knew about the low post count thing...but would never suspect a scam out of someone with a higher count - would never even think about it....my bad...

thanks for the reminder I know I needed it.

You can't use post count to determine scammers. Years ago I frequented an AOL board for military spouses, and there was a girl that posted. She was apparently dating a young Marine. Over the course of 18 months, her life played out like a soap opera culminating with the death of her parents, her fiance being shot, and then her giving birth to triplets. I am proud to say I thought she was fishy from the start, but half the board fell for her never ending drama and ended up sending her money and gifts totaling several hundred dollars. She was eventually found out because her pretend fiance posted that the babies weighed 8 pounds each.:lmao: Turns out she was a total scammer.

You'll see that here too. Some are sly and build up to their begging slowly. They paint sad stories about their kids to play on your sympathy.

OMG! I remember that! I used to post on that board too! (I didn't send her anything, either)...

Yup, reminder taken. If I need someone to donate to there are plenty of people I know IRL who could use my help and who I know don't live beyond their means at all.

I have more to say, but I really am trying to be nice. :goodvibes

Does anyone remember the girl who was a few weeks pregnant with twins - boys, but possibly girls?

:lmao: That was such a train wreck. They kept trying to send her flowers but the hospital had no record of her. I still cannot believe she came back and admitted everything. She was touched in the head. But up until the end if anyone dare call her out on her stories, they got a smack down.

Yes! It's the yay me thread!
http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1309378

I am always amazed at how many people will send money/items to anonymous people on an internet bulletin board. I donate when I can but I prefer to do it locally.

Ok, I'm trying to decide if I have the time to read a 24 page thread from 5 years ago.

Oh what the heck..my haircut isn't for another 45 mins.

Here I go!! :surfweb:popcorn::

That thread was all kinds of awesome. :rotfl2:

I mean the "yay me" thread, not the fake death one.

I sent you a PM... :)

Wow. Did her username have "moon" in it anywhere?

While planning our wedding, I kept running into the "end" of the same sob story, always by someone with "moon" somewhere in the name. Always found it just as it was unraveling....woman poor, wants to be married to her fiance, can't afford it, gifts come in...just barely married, sometimes there were babies sometimes there weren't...she has some sort of trauma and the next thing we knew the new husband was posting she had died...more gifts, more gifts...and then the unraveling. It must have happened on various boards 2 or 3 times in the 3 years (ugh) we were engaged!

What a wonderful idea.....giving positive input and encouragement, suggestions, etc so that people can share their ideas to keep Christmas on a budget.
