Holiday Overlays

From what I understand there are certain rides at DL that get a holiday overlay (Haunted Mansion and Small World?) during the Christmas season. Then after the beginning of January it takes a few weeks to take that off.

We were originally planning on going in May, but now we're looking at going in February, most likely early February, before President's Day. Will the rides be back up by then? Haunted Mansion is my favorite in WDW, I would hate to miss it!!

Usually DL tries to stagger the overlay removal so both HM and IASW are not down at the same time. I think they usually take HM down first sometime around the first week of January and it is usually for 2-3 weeks. For some reason it was longer in 2009. HM is usually back up by late Jan.

IASW usually goes down later in Jan and comes back in Feb some time.

You will not know for sure what is happening until Disney posts it sometime about 2 months before. Late Feb should be safe to see both HM and IASW.

HTH :)

FWIW, the overlays are added in the Fall. HM usually goes down for 2-3 weeks starting the day after Labor Day. It is usually back up by late Sept. IASW goes down in early Oct until early Nov usually.

This year no one knows exactly whats happening with HM because it will be the 40th anniversary on Sept 9 I believe - 09-09-09. So Disney may do something different.

Here is what MousePlanet thinks will happen:

The DLR calendar does not list a HM closing in Sept yet.

Thanks for the info!

Hmmm, maybe the 18-22 would be good. The 28th is my birthday, so it'd be great to go then, but the first week in March I always have a trade show. I'd have to fly back on Sunday (my birthday.) And who wants to fly on their birthday?! :(

MP has pretty good sources that are saying HM will close for overlay from 9/10-9/24. DLR website doesn't have calenders for Sept. yet.

I agree. I have found MP to pretty reliable. Which is why I posted it. :) I was just pointing out that it is not official Disney news yet. :):)

You can add to it by showing the disneyland special events (or occasions?) page that shows that Jack Skellington will be in HM, and Halloween season starts on 9/25. Adds fuel to MP's fire. :)
