Got a bit of a shock today. Rang up the post office to get travel insurance, the usual family cover and medical cover for myself and Doris. Doris has a heart condition and i had to put my self on for the same kind of reasons. Doris' extra cover was only £85 last time (2008). They now want £252 for me AND Doris for our medical conditions-and that is without the standard cover that you also have to have

Anyone got any other ideas? We did find that the post office was the cheapest last year so thought would use them again-am thinking twice though.

Still in shock

Try Nationwide - I got cover for a lot less than I expected to pay with medical conditions.

Cheers for the reply, much appreciated, will try them tomorrow

We took out insurance with Tesco, although had to phone rather than buy on-line or in-store with DD's medical condition :)

Try Age Concern - don't know how old you are - DH is 51 and has mild Angina. Fortis (who insured him last year) won't insure him this year - no change in his condition and he's not even under the hospital:confused3. We got a quote of @ £200 for an annual policy for both of us which I thought was quite good considering the other quotes and refusals we've had

Its just a matter of finding the right company for you and your circumstances. DW has mild hypertension, some companies I tried wanted £300+ for Annual cover because of her condition, most incl Insure & Go who we are with do not add anything on.
Just try company after company, I tried about 10 last month, then went back to Insure & Go. £157 for their top level cover.

I'm getting two weeks' cover for myself and my diabetic girlfriend for £50 from www.karmainsurance.com/ Unfortunately their website's down at the moment, but you could always look for a quote on there tomorrow :)

You should have seen our travel insurance - that would have given you a shock! We had to pay over £400 for my mum, for single trip cover! :scared1: She had a chest infection in May, that led to heart complications (part of the chest infection broke off and went to the heart), had two lots of six-week stays in hospital (one May/June, and one July/August). Ended up with a newly diagnosed heart condition and released from hospital 3 weeks before we were due to fly - talk about premiums!

It also took us until the fourth insurer to find someone to do it, and that was going through those that actually purposefully insure for heart conditions. Anyway, the point is, if you go to the British Heart Foundation, there are some good insurers on there that specialize/cater for heart conditions. Maybe you'll have more luck there?

I know someone(she has hairdresses opposite my shop) they were going to Florida for 1st time this year to visit relatives. Got quote for insurance over £2,000, they are not going now.
Would have thought if someone was such high risk to warrant a premium like that then they would not cover them but thats what they were offered.

Excuse me jumping in on this thread but as your talking about insurance. Me and the DW have insurance through our bank, but my family members who are coming out dont, any recommendations on who the best is?
Thanks :thumbsup2

Thought i had Insure and Go, but that was previous year, annual with DW and myself medical probs covered cost £122, but last year i had AA with medical ailments covered for £112, need to renew for our trip this year as it runs out end of the month, so will need to start looking about.

I've had problems getting insurance for my pre exsisting medical conditions in the past with quotes being as much as the holidays or being turn't down to cover them.
Luckily this year I have found a company called Insurance choice who quoted me £86 for annual policy that will cover all my PEMC's (Cystic fibrosis, diabetes & asthma)

Thanks for the tip about the BHF. Mum was recently told that she has a heart condition (since birth, but a car accident last October caused it to become unstable) and they are talking about surgery before our August trip! Our insurers wont touch her (we had limited choice of insurers due to my health problems) and she is refusing to cancel. We didn't think of trying the list on the BHF, but will certainly be doing that now. Thanks!

Hi , My 12 yr old daughter suffers from renal disease. She had a kidney removed and is on medication. We (myself and my daughter) just got fully comprehensive insurance that covers her existing medical problems, for a single trip, and it cost £68 from 'staysure'. It says on the site that specialises in insurance for over 50's, but they insure anyone regardless of age.

We had problems about 5 years ago when DH had a mild heart problem,,,we were given some very expensive quotes. Soneone then recommended that we try an insurance broker because they tend to have access to and know which companies will cover various medical conditions. They have found us reasonable cover every year since then...around £130 annual for the 2 of us.

On a recent TV prog. regarding travel insurance they said to always try a broker as well.

Incidentally the broker we use found good and reasonable cover for our son (aged 19 at the time) who went out to Orlando for a year to work in the Rose & Crown in Epcot

We have several medical conditions in our family and Travelbility were really good for us!! My ds was still ontreatment for cancer when we went earleir this year and we paid just short of £350 to cover all 6 of us !!
Some quotes were well over £1000 just for ds - they quote online too so no need going through all the questions on the phone !!

Dont know how true it is but we were told last year (we had the same problem so I asked) it can be because they have had to pay a lot of claims for that particular cover and so they stop taking any on for awhile.

Thanks to everyone for their replies, hope it helped others too. Doris is 38 and I will be 40 when we go away. Doris had a heart attack nearly 3 years ago and isn't even under the hospital anymore but we were still shocked by the quote. Am going to try BHF and Age Concern if poss.
Thanks

Both DW and DS have stable PEMC and our travel insurance is in with our house insurance (Woolwich), we got a letter from their doctor and the insurance company are happy to insure with no additional premium. It may be worth your while checking out your house insurance to see if you already have basic cover, if so give them a ring and it may not cost you anything extra at all.:thumbsup2
