I have long been persuading a colleague of mine who usually holidays in The Canary Isles to try Florida. Well this year his wife booked him a surprise birthday fishing trip to Port Charlotte for all the family for two weeks, staying in a beautiful villa.
Not only did he arrive in Fort Myers literally just after hurricane Charlie to find their villa had been wrecked, they couldn't get food, provisions or petrol, but one day after their arrival the wife's father had a huge life threatening stroke back in England, and they had to make emergency plans to return the next day.
I felt so sorry for him, and he looks absolutely shattered.
The only consolation appears to be that he said that the American people were absolutely fantastic, and all of them went out of their way to be helpful, including the villa owners, the car hire company and the airline employees. He has been refunded lots of his money, and is hopeful that the insurance company may reimburse his flights as he was only in Florida for 1 day! His FIL is holding on to life by a thread, and is becoming quite violent toward those closest to him. So sad.
