hole punch room key

If I punch a hole in the corner of my room key (about 1/3" in from edge), will it still unlock my door?

I want to make a hole using a standatd office punch & hang it from a clip ring.

It should just don’t break the magnetic strip.......


I had this done when we went on a cruise, as the cruise line gave us lanyards and they gladly punched a hole on the room key so it could be hung on the ring on the lanyard.

I wouldn't. It might open your room door but if you have a KTTW with your park tickets on it..It won't read in the entrance turnstiles at the park. A lot of people put them in plastic sleeves and then in either a lanyard or one of those "janitor key things" with the retractable "wire".(hope that makes sense)

Why would it not read at the turnstiles if the magnetic strip isn't punched through? Is there a barcode on it as well?

Yuppers, as far I know there is no computer chip in the card, right??

You should be ok, as even the Vegas resorts have hole punchers at their guest services for the room keys.....

On one of our trips, we had 2 rooms so the CM at check in punched little micky shaped holes in the cards for one of the rooms for us so we could tell the KTTW cards apart. As long as the hole is not punched in the magnetic strip there is no problem. If you do punch on/in the magnetic strip the card will not work anywhere because the magnetic information will be basically erased. Same thing will/could happen if you store that card next to anything magnetic or next to a cell phone.

Well someone else mentioned it had a magnetic strip on it. I didn't know if the turnstiles read a barcode printed on the card or if you swipe it like a credit card at the turnstiles using its magnetic strip. I just can't figure out why the turnstiles wouldn't read it if you didn't bother the magnetic strip. I haven't been to WDW in 29 years so I haven't seen the cards.

Just wondering as I have heard that some of the higher end Hotels are experimenting with chip embedded cards for even greater security…

Ok, I remembered reading that it was a bad idea on the AllEars website. It was a while ago so I went to look it up. Here it is. I guess technically it would work if the barcode is intact but this brings up good reasons why not to punch a hole in it. I just kept miner in my pocket but all my pants seemed to have cargo pockets w/ snaps or zippers so for me it worked. Anyway, here you go...

Hi Eric!

Punching a hole in a ticket is never a good idea. First off, if your ticket was attached to something, you wouldn't be able to send it through the readers at the turnstiles or Fastpass machines. Second, if you happen to punch it at the wrong end, you may not be able to use it to open your resort room door if your tickets are encoded on your Key to the World card. It would also make charging purchases back to your room difficult. Please don't do it.

A better idea is to purchase a lanyard with a sturdy zip-seal plastic pocket. You can wear it around your neck, and since the pocket seals, you're not likely to lose anything out of it. These come in many styles and sizes and are readily available at any Disney gift shop. If you don't care about Disney theming, you can get a very inexpensive one at any large office products outlet, as most convention planners use them for their events. I don't like having one around my neck, so I have a carabiner-style one that clips onto a belt loop and has a long retractable cord on it. I keep the plastic pocket part in my pocket, and extend the cord when I want to access my ticket or Fastpass. This type is also available with an alligator clip instead of the clip-on carabiner ring.

By the way, you didn't ask, but many people want to know if they can laminate their paper tickets to make them stronger. The answer is no. Laminating will cover the magnetic strip rendering it unreadable, and therefore useless. The paper tickets are stronger than they look as they are infused with plastic and are very difficult to tear. Don't fold or roll them, however, and I wouldn't send them through the wash. Please don't ask me why I know that.
