Holding Points Question

If I have a reservation for April 9-13 and I call today and cancel the night of 4/12, these points still go into holding even though it is 31 days before 4/12? I have never done this and was told the 31 days has to be from the first checkin day, not the day you are dropping. Is this correct?

Thanks,
Becky

This is a great question, and one that I haven't seen before.

My guess is no, the points would become regular UY points again, because Disney allows Day-To-Day booking (Based on 11 & 7 month windows, they should allow day-to-day cancellations avoiding Holding Point Status based on the 31 day rule.

Please postand let us know the 'actual' answer!

The DVC Guide that I talked with on Friday put the points into holding. I am going to call and ask again and also pull my membership materials. I was not aware that you would be penalized if you did not cancel 31 days from the checkin of the entire reservation, not the day you cancel. Maybe it is spelled out in the Member Services Handbook, I just thought maybe someone on this board had some recent knowledge of this.

Thanks,
Becky

Actually, I think this is one of those wierd quirks. The 31 days no penalty is actually from the beginning of the reservation. There appears to be some abiguity in the Public Offering Statement on this point, but this interpretation is not inconsistent with the language. Basically, they appear to deem all of the vacation points for a reservation to be tied to the initial night of the reservation for at least some purposes, so I am guessing that it might apply here, too, though I think this is the first time I have actually seen the issue come up.

Plus, come to think of it, they newest line I hear, is that once arrived, modification or cancelation of your vacations, will result in the forefit of your DVC points. I hear this after the 31 day rule spiel

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

I would suggest the OP speak with a supervisor on Monday Morning, and explain the cancelled portion was greater than 31 days out.

Again, OP, please let us know!

VAScubaGuy has some of the info from the handbook up on his DVC website: http://members.cox.net/disneyvacationclub/

Click on "DVC Charts & Calendars" and scroll down to the section "Canceling or Changing Reservations". To avoid having your points go into the holding account you would have to change/cancel at least 31 days prior to check-in.

When you make a day by day reservation, you start by making a 1-day reservation. Then you call the next day and add a day to your reservation, and so on until the reservation is complete. You aren't freeing up any points in the process and besides you are way outside the 30-day window anyway.

Even at 7 months, if you do a day-by-day switch from your home resort to another resort where the points are lower, again there is no problem if you are successful in changing your reservation because you are outside the 30-day limit. However if you are waitlisted for any of those days for the lower-point resort and those days don't come through until you are within the 30-day window, the points that are freed up go in to the holding account.

So you do have to be careful making any changes to your reservation 30 days or less from your check-in date.

The written rules say 30 days or less "prior to arrival" for points to go into a holding account.
