10+ years DVC member first time having a holding points issue! Made reservation using our points for friends to come with us on a trip in May to BWV. Unfortunately, friend's mom got very ill and passed away and they had to cancel. This was within 7 days of trip so the points went into a holding account. I currently have reservations for Nov and Dec trips. Is there any way to apply those holding account points to those already confirmed reservations that used "regular" points at the time I made them? My use year is Feb. Any guidance is appreciated! Thanks.

As mentioned. Something needs to be available still for them to be used.

No, I have been lucky to have them picked up for nights that were mid trip when I did the modify feature so that was nice.

So, you can always keep trying before you hit the 31 day mark. Once you get there, you’d end up in the same point…holding points as any change, even point swapping, counts against holding.

You can only swap the points if your specific room and resort is still available within 60 days of arrival date. Otherwise, it is just a pointless restriction with a massive loophole.
Actually even if the resort is sold out you can do it. I have done it many times on a sold out resort. Simply go online and modify the reservation by reselecting the room and the system will use the holding points first. You see when you modify the system makes the same exact rooms available again since you are asking the system to allow you to modify. You will not loose the room because you are not agreeing to cancel and give the rooms up you are simply modify and agree to modify your room to the exact same dates you currently have booked.

If what was quoted above is corrects then it is a pointless restriction with a massive loophole as quoted below:

Well that is certainly an interesting turn of events and a game changer if it works that way.

That didn’t work for me two days ago when I wanted to modify an existing reservation to use some points banked from the previous UY and get back regular current-year points. I tried to modify the reservation online and keep everything the same but when I got to the page to select the contracts, the existing contracts being used for the reservation had a “padlock” icon and I couldn’t select different ones. And when I was done, the banked points had not been used. Fortunately I was able to achieve what I wanted using online chart, but I’m dubious that this would work for holding points.

With banked points, you just check all the contracts, including leaving the locked ones intact.

It will pull banked at the end from the newly checked contract once You actually book it. It makes it seem like it won’t, but it does.

hat’s exactly what I did, but after doing so I went to “My Points” to try to bank the returned points, but could not, as they had not been used in the “modified” reservation. So possibly a glitch.

That usually will work. Glad you got it adjusted though.

This worked for me perfectly… just hit modify an existent reservation, picked the same room and switched the usage of the points…only trick is that check in date must be up to 60days in advance… thanks for the tip!

Was a loophole in the system that has since been closed

I wanted to share our experience on the holding points and modifying an existing reservation. So at Christmas we had a 1 BR @ BWV for 11 nights and then a Poly room for the last 3 nights. We wanted to change it to BWV for 10 nights and Poly for 4. The BWV stay was within the 30 day mark. We called in because we were afraid of messing something up and/or having points going into holding.

Here is what the cast member had us do. First we cleared up enough points (cancelled an SSR stay in June that we will rebook) to modify Poly so he could extend it to 4 nights. He then shortened the BWV stay which put 50 points in holding. But he then went in and modified Poly and it took the 50 points that were in holding.

He said the reason this worked is because the second part of the split stay was still more than 30 days out.

Just wanted to share the experience.....

Its actually "not" a loophole at all. Its the online way of doing it instead of calling in and asking MS to reallocate your points when you are within the 60 day arrival window so that the reservation you have coming up uses the holding points. By the way it still works online just did it recently. Now that the flu is bad and lots of you are forced to cancel your upcoming reservations, here is how you can handle the holding point situation.

The "loophole" is that you should only be able to allocate holding points to a room that is otherwise available within 60 days, but the system was (is?) allowing you to modify and allocate holding points to an existing reservation because it shows as available when modifying since you already have the room blocked off. The purpose of holding points is to ensure that last-minute inventory gets consumed, so simply remembering to modify an existing reservation between 30 and 60 days out isn't at all the intent.
